Notes: Abstract Macroinvertebrate communities sampled by a corer, plankton net and sweep net from five wetlands on the Swan Coastal Plain were compared. The composition of the fauna collected in sweeps and tows was generally similar and differed from that collected in the cores. Cores caught fewer species than tows and sweeps at all wetlands and did not capture fast swimming hemipterans or less abundant taxa. The highest species richness was recorded in sweep samples in four out of the five wetlands. Classification (TWIN-SPAN) and ordination (SSH) of the samples collected in sweeps and tows gave good separation of the wetlands, whereas classification of core samples did not. Coring appeared to be the least suitable sampling method for describing the major components of the macroinvertebrate communities of these wetlands. Plankton tows were useful if the time available for sorting was limited as these samples were free of sediments and generally gave similar results to those obtained with sweeps. Sweeps appeared to be the most useful method for a large classification study as they collected more species and resulted in the best discrimination amongst wetlands.

Notes: A total of 1125 normal chick embryos, representing 25 each of the 45 stages of Hamburger and Hamilton, were removed, fixed in Bouin's solution, stored in 70% ethanol and weighed with a semi-micro analytical balance. Entire blastoderms of stages 1-8 were weighed, whereas only embryos-proper were weighed in stages 9-45. As a consequence, results constituted two groups, each of which showed a geometric rate of growth marked only by minor deviations which were related to specific events of normal growth and development.

Notes: Abstract The concept of multivariate classification of “geological objects” can be combined with the concept of regionalized variables to yield a procedure for typification of geological objects, such as rock units, well records, or samples. Numerical classification is followed by subdivision of the area of investigation, and culminates in a regionalization or mapping of the classification onto the plane. Regions are subdivisions of the map area which are spatially contiguous and relatively homogeneous in their geological properties. The probability of correct classification of each point within a region as being part of that region can be assessed in terms of Bayesian probability as a space-dependent function. The procedure is applied to subsurface data from western Kansas. The geologic properties used are quantitative variables, and relationships are expressed by Mahalanobis' distances. These functions could be replaced by other metrics if qualitative or binary data derived from geological descriptions or appraisals were included in the analysis.

Notes: Microcurie amounts of p32, Na22, Fe59, and Cl36 in normally occurring compounds were injected directly into the vitelline vessels of developing chick embryos at stage 24 (Hamburger and Hamilton, '51). The surviving embryos were sacrificed at stage 41. Hearts were removed and examined intact or sectioned for later examination. Coronary vessels were identified, classified according to size (large, diameter = 〉 80 μ; medium, diameter = 40-80 μ; small, diameter 〈 40 μ) and counted. There was a significant increase in the numbers of small and medium vessels which had developed in the presence of gamma radiation emitted by Na22- and Fe59-compounds. The p32- and Cl36-containing compounds did not affect the numbers of vessels of any size. The resulting increased vascularity is shown to be a matter of a distinct increase in numbers of blood vessels as opposed to a simple alteration of the normally occurring vessels.
