Notizen: Summary Technical advances in microsurgery have made frequent use of free flaps possible. One of the concerns of the microsurgeons has been the role of ischemia in flap failure. In five patients, the rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap and the radial forearm flap each having with two dominant pedicles were used employing microsurgical vascular anastomoses before section of the second pedicle. This procedure eliminates the ischemic period of the flap and consequent accumulation of free radicals and development of microthrombi, ensuring vascular perfusion during the entire operation.

Notizen: Abstract  The aim of this study was to examine the anatomy of the external pudendal vessels as they supply the anterior scrotal region. Twenty cadavers were dissected and a catheter was used to inject India ink into the external pudendal arteries. The entire anterior scrotal region was dyed in all these cases. In one case, the dye extended beyond the scrotal raphe, staining the opposite scrotum. The skin of the region proximal to the penis on the same side was also stained; in ten cadavers, in 11 the skin of the superior-medial homolateral thigh displayed dye. The external pudendal artery was a single vessel in 55% of cases, double in 30% and with a common trunk with the superficial inferior epigastric artery in 15%. The external pudendal vein as single in 45% and double in 55%. The arterial diameter ranged from 1.55 to 2.90 mm for the single artery, 1.9 to 3.00 mm for the double artery, and 3.50 to 4.00 mm for the common trunk. The diameter both of the single and the double vein ranged from 1.56 to 3.70 mm. The pedicle length from the femoral vessels to the scrotal region ranged from 7.2 to 9.5 cm. The diameter, the length of the pedicle vessels, and their constant anatomy suggest that the anterior scrotal region may be used as a donor site for a microsurgical flap.

Notizen: Pulmonary structure and function were quantitatively investigated over the lifespan of the Fischer 344 rat by morphometric and physiologic techniques. Male animals 1 week, 6 weeks, 5 months, 14 months, and 26 months of age and female animals 5 months, 14 months, and 26 months of age were studied. All alveolar tissue compartments demonstrated significant increases in volume, surface area, and cell number during the first 5 months of life. From 5 to 26 months of age, remodelling in the epithelial and interstitial compartments continued to take place while the endothelial compartment remained relatively unchanged. In the epithelial compartment the ratio of type II cells to type I cells lining the alveolar surface decreased as age increased. In the interstitial compartment the volume of the noncellular components of the interstitium increased by 39% in males and by 89% in females from 5 to 26 months of age. Physiologic measurements of lung volumes in males at 6 weeks, 14 months, and 26 months demonstrated progressive increases in vital capacity (VC) and total lung capacity (TLC). Morphometric pulmonary-diffusion capacity (DLO2) increased in males from 1 week to 5 months of age and remained relatively unchanged from 5 to 26 months of age in both sexes.
