    Notes: Summary Ninety-six patients with intracranial meningiomas and two with hemangiopericytic variants received a 30-min intravenous infusion of bromodeoxyuridine (BrdUrd), 200 mg/m2, before tumor removal. Excised tumor specimens were stained by the indirect immunoperoxidase method to determine the BrdUrd labeling index (LI), or percentage of cells in DNA synthesis. The BrdUrd LI was 〈 1% in 63 (86.3%) of 73 nonmalignant meningiomas and 〈 1% in 20 (87%) of 23 malignant meningiomas. Of 23 malignant meningiomas 11 were recurrent tumors; 8 patients had recurrence 3 to 33 months after the study. The recurrence rate was 100% (five of five) in patients whose tumors had a BrdUrd LI 〉 5%, 44% (11 of 25) in those with a BrdUrd LI 1% to 5%, and 6.1% (4 of 66) in those with an LI 〈 1%. Thus, meningiomas with a BrdUrd LI 〉 1% may grow faster and recur more frequently. Among patients with malignant mengngiomas, the mean time to recurrence after the study was 7.5 months in those with a BrdUrd LI 〉 5% and 20.2 months for those with an LI 1% to 5%. The mean time to recurrence was 97.8 months in patients with nonmalignant meningiomas. Both hemangiopericytic variants were recurrent and showed LIs of 0.5% and 4.1%; the former tumor recurred 8 years after complete resection, while the latter recurred three times in 3.5 years. Thus, the proliferative potential of intracranial meningiomas as reflected by the BrdUrd LI appears to be a prognostic variable that can help to elucidate the biological behavior of individual meningiomas.

    Notes: Abstract  Integer Linear Programming was used to maximize genetic gain from selection at a given level of relatedness. Variances and breeding values for total height were available for 296 plus-trees of Pinus sylvestris which had been evaluated by open-pollinated progeny testing at a single test site in northern Sweden. Second-generation breeding and selection scenarios for this breeding population were evaluated using simulated data derived deterministically from normal distributions of estimated breeding values of progeny around mid-parent family means. The study considered two mating designs, assortative and non-assortative single-pair mating, and two selection criteria, individual phenotype and performance of half-sib progeny. Relatedness (group coancestry) was restricted to a level equivalent to that given by within-family selection of 2 trees per family from each of 25 families (the current standard in Sweden). Selection that allows the best-performing families to contribute a greater number of progeny was superior, both when the breeding population size was limited to 50 individuals and when it was allowed to be larger. The selected set giving the greatest average breeding value under restricted group coancestry included the best individual from families that would have been rejected under application of standard within-family selection. We made a comparison of the present value on retrieved gain between phenotypic selection and evaluation by progeny testing.

    Notes: Summary Because the quotient of two normal variables does not fit a normal distribution and tends to be heterocedastic, the use of internal-standard least-squares regression on data obtained from such ratios gives a calibration function which can result in inaccurate determination of the concentration of analyte in a sample. In this work we have studied simulated situations in which area-ratios are fitted to a normal distribution. It is shown that the least-squares model is inappropriate when the ordinate data-ratios are not normally distributed, and some recommendations are proposed to ensure both normality and homocedasticity of the quotient of analyte/internal-standard signals. Finally, GC-MS separation and quantification of nine fatty acids by use of an internal standard are used for experimental verification of the conclusions reached.
