Notes: Abstract In order to give further insight into the potential role of PKC in beneficial effects of ischemic preconditioning, we have characterized the production of diacylglycerol, the endogenous activator of PKC, and its molecular species composition in ischemic control and preconditioned hearts. Preconditioning was induced by 1 cycle of 5 min of ischemia followed by 5 min of reperfusion. In control and preconditioned groups, hearts were harvested under deep anesthesia at baseline (preischemia) and at 2,5 and 10 min into the sustained coronary artery occlusion, i.e., preceding myocyte death. Diacylglycerol content and fatty acid composition were analysed by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), respectively. Myocardial diacylglycerol content was increased at 2 min into the sustained ischemia in the control group (481 ± 34 vs 292 ± 64 ng.mg−1 at baseline; p 〈 0.05), but was comparable to the baseline value at 5 and 10 min. In the preconditioned group, diacylglycerol production remained unchanged throughout the 10-min test ischemia (317 ± 17 at 2 min vs 312 ± 38 ng.mg−1 at baseline; p = NS). A detailed analysis of the molecular species composition at the time of 2 min revealed a reduced contribution of phosphatidy-linositol to diacylglycerol production in preconditioned myocardium (global correlation coefficient 0.57 vs 0.66 in control myocardium) with a trend toward an enrichment of diacylglycerol composition with some species originating from phosphatidylcholine. Thus, our study revealed that brief preconditioning ischemia: (1) prevents the increase of diacylglycerol content in the early minutes of the sustained ischemia, and (2) emphasizes the contribution of phosphatidylcholine in diacylglycerol formation to the detriment of that of phosphatidylinositol.

Notes: Abstract New infrared reflectivity spectroscopic measurements for polarization of the electric field perpendicular to the ferroelectric axis of KDP in its ferroelectric phase at 7K, are presented and discussed. The optical mode parameters of modes belonging to B1 and B2 symmetry are deduced from the experimental infrared reflectivity, together with the fractional number of dipoles pointing in the + c direction.

Notes: A fundamental study was conducted on the effectiveness of the chemical calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) as a sulfur capture agent during combustion of pulverized coal. It was based on high-temperature laboratory-bench experiments with the scope of exploring the use of CMA as a “dry scrubbing” medium for in-boiler injection. Two methods of CMA introduction in the furnace were considered: dry-spraying fine powders of the chemical and wet-spraying aqueous solutions to generate fine aerosols. It considered conditions pertinent to post-flame in-boiler injection of CMA to identify optimum temperatures and residence times. In addition to the versatility of the water-soluble CMA to enable spray drying injection and therefore eliminate grinding costs, there are other attractive features. Mainly, its ability to form highly cenospheric, “popcorn” -like, oxide particles on heating to high temperatures. These cenospheres possess thin, porous walls with blowholes that enable penetration of the SO2 in the interior of the particle which promotes high sorbent utilization. SO2 captures in the order of 90% were achieved with dry-injection of the chemical at furnace gas temperatures of about 1,000° C, a Ca/S ratio of 2, and particle size of ≈ 50 μm. Moreover, CMA was superior(by over 40%) to either CaCO3 or Ca(OH)2 in sulfur capture effectiveness per unit mass of calcium. This commercially obtained CMA was even superior to reagent-grade calcium acetate (by as much as 30%), again per unit mass of calcium. The utilization of CMA and calcium acetate depended on the cenosphere wall thickness, rather than the particle size and, thus, outperformed other sorbents regardless of the size of the resulting oxide particles.

Notes: Raman scattering is used to make a dynamical study of the disubstituted and perdeuterated diacetylene pTS-D in monomer crystal from, where an incommensurate phase exists from T1 = 155 K to T1 = 195 K. The low-frequency polarised Raman spectra in the temperature interval 9-300 K show that the phase transition is related to side-group rotations decoupled as from the diacetylene backbone, as in pTS-D polymer. A comparison with another disubstituted diacetylene DNP shows that it is very difficult to obtain symmetrical diacetylene polymers in a non-centrosymmetric structure.

Notes: The Raman spectra of ferroelectric [NH(CH3)3]3Sb2Cl9 single crystals were studied at temperatures ranging from 90 to 390 K. An assignment of most of the observed bands is proposed. A second-order phase transition around 364 K leading to a high-temperature paraelectric phase manifested itself by spliting of the antisymmetric CH3 stretching band (3035 cm-1) below the transition temperature. A temperature dependence study revealed the existence of disorder in the crystal. A systematic measurement of the CH3 torsional vibration Raman band (305 cm-1) was performed and the activation energy (Ea = 2.39 kcal mol-1) of an unidentified organic group HN(CH3)3+ motion was extracted from the half-width versus temperature curve.

Notes: The Raman spectra of ferroelectric (CH3NH3)3Bi2Br9 single crystals were studied at temperatures from 80 to 300 K and in the wavenumber range 0-300 cm-1. A tentative assignment of the observed bands is proposed. The phase transitions reported at 188, 140 and 101.5 K influence the Raman spectra and the observed changes are discussed in terms of the possible mechanisms involved. The lowest phase transition at 101.5 K is directly connected with instability of the inorganic sublattice.

Notes: Polymerization of diphenyldiacetylene was effected in the presence of Ziegler type catalysts. The polymers, studied as obtained from the polymerization or after further reaction, are soluble products of relatively low molecular weight with interesting properties: very high thermal resistance, continuous absorption in ultraviolet and near visible regions, broad visible fluorescence spectra, semiconducting and catalytic properties.

Notes: Polarized Raman and IR spectra of lattice vibrations (10-260 cm-1) in the m-aminophenol crystal have been recorded at various temperatures in the range 20-300 K. LO-TO splittings of about 2 cm-1 have been observed for two modes of A1 symmetry. Lattice dynamic calculations of frequencies and calculations of Raman intensities based on the generalized oriented gas model have been performed. A discussion of the influence of hydrogen bonding on the lattice dynamics is presented.

Notes: The relative intensities of bands in a polarized Raman Lattice spectrum of p-chloroaniline are interpreted in terms of the oriented gas model. Among different reasons for deviations from this model the vibronic intensity enhancement of B1g and B3g lattice bands has been found to be the most important one.
