Notizen: A comparison of experimental and theoretical surface tensions leads to a correlation between homogeneous fluid parameters and the inhomogeneous influence parameter c. From this correlation, it is possible to predict, to within excellent agreement with experiment, the surface tensions of normal alkanes and alcohols from bulk data only.

Notizen: Surface tensions of several binary mixtures are computed using the gradient theory of inhomogeneous fluids. The interfacial influence parameters are determined from mixing rules and pure fluid experimental tensions. A comparison of the compositional dependence of the predicted and experimental tensions indicates that the best results for nonpolar hydrocarbons are obtained from a geometric mixing rule for the influence parameter. Predicted tensions vs. composition for nonpolar systems are in excellent agreement with experiment, generally lying within 2% of observed data. Predictions are poor for alcohol solutions.

Notizen: That phase equilibrium exists at the gas-liquid interface during gas absorption is usually assumed in the analysis and design of absorption equipment, but the validity of this assumption has been in doubt since Higbie's pioneering gas-absorption studies. Accurate measurements are reported herein of the absorption rates at 25°C. of carbon dioxide into short water jets in which the liquid was in laminar flow. The jets issued from circular nozzles of about 1.5-mm. diam., flowed intact downward through an atmosphere of carbon dioxide at average velocities of from 75 to 550 cm./sec. over distances of 1 to 15 cm., and were collected in a receiver slightly larger in diameter than the nozzles. The measured absorption rates are in excellent agreement with predictions based on unsteady state diffusion theory, when one assumes interfacial equilibrium. It is concluded from these results and those of other investigators that equilibrium prevails at a freshly formed, relatively clean, carbon dioxide-water interface and that the same statement probably applies to the absorption of other slightly soluble gases in water.Evidence is discussed which indicates that an accumulation of minute quantitities of surface-active materials may seriously reduce the rate of gas absorption, either by affecting the hydrodynamic characteristics of the system or perhaps by offering resistance to the transfer of solute molecules across the interface.

Notizen: The Isotherm Migration Method of numerically analyzing conduction with phase change is modified to handle surface and external resistances, appearance, and propagation of successive fronts into slabs of composite material of one or more constituents finely dispersed in a matrix, different components transforming at different temperatures. Procedures are developed for selecting temperature intervals between isotherms, initially locating isotherms by means of analytical approximations to the earliest stages, and thereafter inserting and removing isotherms as appropriate, particularly when each component gives rise to a separate front.

Notizen: The Modified Isotherm Migration Method (MIMM) is developed for solving one-dimensional Stefan-type problems of multifront propagation in slabs, cylinders and spheres with a boundary condition of the third kind (radiation-type boundary condition). The method is illustrated for all three geometries with applications to the thawing of ice and to the freezing of a 50-50 dispersion of tetradecane in water, a system in which two freezing fronts propagate simultaneously.

Notizen: In connection with a study of the mechanism of gas absorption the problem arose of predicting absorption rates into laminar liquid jets. A solution to the problem is presented in this paper, which provides an example of the application of fluid dynamics to the analysis of mass transfer in a complex flow system. The water jets considered here issued from circular nozzles of about 1.5-mm diameter, flowed intact downward through an atmosphere of solute gas at average velocities of from 75 to 550 cm./sec. over distances of 1 to 15 cm., and were collected in a receiver slightly larger in diameter than the nozzles. Equations describing the liquid flow near the jet surface are deduced from measurements of jet diameter and analogy to related flow situations. When one uses these equations, absorption rates are predicted from unsteady state diffusion theory with the assumption of interfacial equilibrium. The predicted rates for carbon dioxide at 25°C are in close agreement with experimental determinations over the observed range of contact time of the liquid with gas, namely 0.003 to 0.04 sec.

Notizen: The origin of interfacial turbulence, spontaneous agitation of the interface between two unequilibrated liquids, has been explained in terms of classical flow, diffusion, and surface processes. The essence of the explanation is the long-known though much neglected Marangoni effect, wherein movement in an interface is caused by longitudinal variations of interfacial tension. It is proposed that interfacial turbulence is a manifestation of hydrodynamic instability, which is touched off by ever present, small, random fluctuations about the interface.A simplified mathematical model has been analyzed in order to detail the mechanism of the “interfacial engine” which supplies the mechanical energy of interfacial turbulence. In its present form the analysis incorporates several drastic simplifications, though ways of removing some of these have been suggested. The groundwork has been laid for the more elaborate analyses that are needed for a decisive test of the theory. The analysis shows how some systems may be stable with solute transfer in one direction yet unstable with transfer in the opposite direction, a striking result. It also suggests that interfacial turbulence is usually promoted by (1) solute transfer out of the phase of higher viscosity, (2) solute transfer out of the phase in which its diffusivity is lower, (3) large differences in kinematic viscosity and solute diffusivity between the two phases, (4) steep concentration gradients near the interface, (5) interfacial tension highly sensitive to solute concentration, (6) low viscosities and diffusivities in both phases, (7) absence of surface-active agents, and (8) interfaces of large extent. That some of these effects have been observed in the laboratory lends credence to the theory.

Notizen: Asymmetric film-splitting of shear-thinning liquid between rotating cylinders in forward roll coating is analyzed with the Carreau model of shear-sensitive liquid. The mass and momentum conservation equations for steady, two-dimensional flow are solved by means of the Galerkin finite-element method. A simpler model is also developed from the lubrication approximation and its range of validity is established. The major results are that the greater the shear thinning, the farther out of the gap the splitting meniscus moves, the higher the flow rate through the gap, and the more symmetrical the film split than with Newtonian liquid. Experiments reported in the literature confirm some of these predicted trends.

Notizen: The fiber spinning process of viscoelastic liquid is successfully analyzed by means of a nonlinear integral constitutive equation, finite-element discretization, and Newton iteration. The process is cast and studied both as an initial value problem, which requires the specification of the drawing force, and as a two-point boundary value problem, which requires the specification of the draw ratio. Solutions are obtained up to high elasticity, high draw ratio, and large drawing force. The results agree with the analytic asymptotic solution for Newtonian liquid, with existing numerical solutions in the limiting case of the upper-convected Maxwell liquid, and with available experimental data on spinning of polystyrene melt at 170°C and low-density polyethylene at 150°C.
