Notizen: Abstract In order to elucidate the role of the contact structure between gold and metal oxide support in low-temperature CO oxidation, a mechanical mixture of colloidal gold with TiO2 powder was prepared and calcined at different temperatures. The sample calcined at 473 K, which is composed of spherical gold particles with a mean diameter of 5.1 nm and TiO2 powder, is poorly active for CO oxidation at temperatures up to 473 K. The catalytic activity appreciably increases with an increase in calcination temperature up to 873 K even though gold particles grow to larger ones, reaching a level with almost the same turnover frequency as that of Au/TiO2 prepared by a deposition–precipitation method.

Notizen: The annealing characteristics of highly-oriented, high density polyethylene (HDPE) fibers extruded at 90°C to constant extrusion draw ratios (EDR) of 5.8 to 30 have been studied using small-(SAXS) and wide-angle (WAXD) x-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal shrinkage and tensile tests. The thermal stability in macroscopic properties, such as transparency, sample dimension, and tensile modulus, remarkably increases with the sample EDR. However, the folded chain crystals within microfibrils sensitively reorganize on annealing at ≥ 110°C, even when the macroscopic properties exhibit no significant changes at high EDR's. Although the EDR has a minor effect on the reorganizability of the fold chain crystals, it has a major influence on the SAXS intensity and the extended chain crystalline component detected by WAXD for both unannealed and annealed extrudates. This specific crystalline component has an improved thermal stability and enhances the thermal stability of macroscopic properties at higher EDR. The fibers extruded at 90°C in this study and those prepared at 134°C in a prior study, exhibit significantly different melting behavior after annealing and for long period vs. EDR relationships. These facts combined with the independent observations of the effect of annealing and extrusion temperatures on the consequent long period strongly suggest that annealing during extrusion plays an important role in determining the microstructure of extrudates, especially for extrusion near the ambient melting point of the polymer.

Notizen: Proton spin-spin relaxation times and the Weibull coefficient have been measured as functions of temperature for poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) drawn at 50°C in both the amorphous and the semicrystalline (50%) states. Two relaxation times T2a (long) and T2c (short) are observed for all samples. They are ascribed, respectively, to the relaxation of the amorphous and of the crystalline components including highly strained noncrystalline segments. Effects of initial morphology are found for chain mobility in the noncrystalline regions and for the crystal perfection, evaluated from T2a and the Weibull coefficient μc of the T2c-component, respectively. For all draw ratios, T2a for extrudates prepared from the semicrystalline polymer (C-50) is short compared to that for preparations from the amorphous (A-50) polymer. In the A-50 samples, the perfection of stress-induced crystals increase with increasing draw ratio. In the C-50 samples, the crystal orientation increases, whereas the perfection decreases with increasing draw ratio. To improve the crystal perfection, annealing at higher temperature or longer time is required for C-50 as compared with A-50. The value of μc correlates well with the change in crystal perfection during deformation and annealing.
