Notizen: Pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) studies were performed on a glass-forming polymer, poly(carbonate) (PC), under both isobaric and isochoric (constant volume) conditions. An isochoric glass transition was observed and the formation points were found to be consistent with those obtained isobarically. Although the isobaric and isochoric responses were, as expected, the same in the rubbery state, the glassy state values were found to be different and dependent upon the glass formation history. The isobaric data exhibited larger changes in going from the rubber to the glass, hence a “stronger” glass transition, than did the isochoric data. Inserting the experimental values for the thermal expansion coefficient α and isothermal compressibility β, into appropriate thermodynamic relations, measures of the strength of each transition are defined. Strength estimates based on literature values of α and β are compared to the experimental measures of the isochoric and isobaric transitions. In addition, both the isobaric and isochoric PVT results were analyzed in terms of the Fox and Flory free volume theory which assumes that the glass transition is an iso-free volume state. While the isobaric results were consistent with the Fox and Flory theory, the isochoric results were not consistent with the idea of an iso-free volume glass transition. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notizen: Mechanical degradation of reinforcing fillers during processing is a problem that has been seldom studied due to a lack of particle size determination techniques. Using phlogopite mica as an example, a method allowing a rapid and accurate characterization of flake size and aspect ratio will be described. The influence of several parameters on the mechanical degradation of mica flakes in a mica/polypropylene system has been studied using a laboratory roller blade mixer. The degradation was found to occur in two stages. The first stage takes place immediately after the addition of mica, where the average flake size decreases very rapidly by as much as 20 percent. In the second stage, the particle size remains essentially constant with the time of mixing at low concentrations (2 percent wt); at higher concentrations (40 percent wt) there is a slow reduction in the flake size. The influence of other parameters such as system viscosity, mode of mica addition, silane treatment, and the initial particle size is also discussed.

Notizen: A Taylor-Hobson Talysurf instrument was used to quantify the surface roughness of phlogopite mica-polypropylene extrudates. The rate of feeding and the speed of rotation of the screw were found to have a significant effect on the surface texture. Under the appropriate conditions of extrusion the roughness of 40 percent (by weight) mica-filled polypropylene extrudates could be reduced by a factor of three. This effect was found to be independent of the extrusion rate.

Notizen: Abstract Shooting incidents are often portrayed as resulting in a sometimes violent backwards displacement of the victim. This opinion is also not infrequently held by expert witnesses. The physical force responsible for this would be momentum (mass x velocity). The physics of momentum in ballistic injury is explained in detail. The maximum momentum transferred from different small arms projectiles including large calibre rifles and a 12-gauge shotgun only results in a backwards motion of a 80 kg target body of 0.01–0.18 m/s, which is negligible compared to the velocity of a pedestrian (1–2 m/s). Furthermore, counterbalance is constantly maintained by neurophysiological reflexes. So the effect of the momentum transferred from the missile is virtually zero and there is no backwards motion of the person shot. Empirical evidence verifying these calculations can be obtained from hunting big game, from human gunshot victims and from a video documentary demonstrating the lack of any backwards motion of a person wearing body armour after hits from a centre fire rifle. So the alleged backwards hurling of a person shot is nothing but a myth which should be refuted not only because it is incorrect but also because it can result in miscarriages of justice.

Notizen: This paper describes the shear imposed interfacial segregation of release systems for the facilitated attenuation of polyurethane (PU) adhesion to metal coun-terfaces using a RI-RIM system. It is shown that the migration rate of the dispersed release additives due to a shear imposed stress in the resin fluid is much greater than that arising from Fickian diffusion, thereby removing a vital constraint from conventional practice. The novel rotary injection RIM system is presented to simulate the on-line injection and shear induced interfacial segregation in model PU/abherent systems. A wide range of recipes comprising single (liquids or solids) and multicomponent (liquid-liquid and solid-liquid) release materials were injected into the polymerizing resin mixture to provide cohesively weak and friable “particle” boundary layer assemblies at the PU/metal interface. An instrumented Blister Test was employed to evaluate the quality of the molded interfaces in terms of adhesion and the concentration distribution of the injected species in the final cured moldings was determined through high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). A comparison of the results on the shear modified and the compounded interfaces confirm an accentuated lateral migration of the additives to the interface resulting in an appreciable diminution in the adhesion of the system. Finally, transport models are suggested to account for the observed augmented transport.

Notizen: A good extrusion die must distribute the polymer melt in the flow channel such that the material exits from the die with a uniform velocity and temperature. Coathanger dies are commonly used for the extrusion of plastic sheets and films. The die is usually provided with a straining bar allowing a regulation of the flowrate in the case of a poor design. But this, in turn, can affect temperature uniformity. Therefore, the design of coathanger die is a complex task which is mainly accomplished by trial and error in industry. Analyses of the flow in coathanger dies have been reported in the literature. Analytical and numerical approaches are used to solve this problem. The first one involves many simplifying assumptions: the most important ones being the unidirectional and isothermal flow of the polymer. Most numerical methods deal with a 2-D geometry, but only a few of them have considered the non-isothermal flow. A new model has been developed using a modified FAN method (Flow Analysis Network introduced by Tadmor) for the calculation of the 2-D flow, coupled with a finite-difference scheme for the calculation of temperature. The overall model can run on a PC with only a few minutes of calculation. Good agreement was obtained between experimental data and simulations.

Notizen: The mechanical properties of three dimensional stitched composites were compared against those of the traditional two dimensional laminates. An attempt was made to correlate the change in properties to the change in the third directional fiber density. Tests conducted were the impact, three-point bending, damage tolerance, end notched flexure, and bending fatigue test. The results of these tests show that the third directional fibers can effectively inhibit delamination by increasing the interlaminar shear strength. Three dimensional composites also possess better damage tolerance, fracture toughness, and fatigue life. However, a high stitching density can degrade the in-plane properties of the composites.

Notizen: This work deals with the effects of material and processing parameters on the mechanical behavior and morphology of noncompatlbilized polypropylene-polycarbonate (PP-PC) blends. The blends containing between 0 and 40 vol. percent of polycarbonate were compounded using a twin screw extruder and converted by injection molding using molds with rectangular as well as dogbone shaped cavities. The blends exhibit a complex skin-core morphology which evolves with the composition. Despite the absence of interfacial adhesion, the low strain modulus increases with PC concentration and follows approximately the Takayanagi model for systems with perfect adhesion. A slight increase of stiffness and strength with increasing PP/PC viscosity ratio is also observed. Weldline strength of these blends is generally poor and decreases with the increasing PC concentration.

Notizen: A method to analyze the closed-loop stability of a system composed of a nonlinear process and a discrete controller is developed. The closed-loop system is described by a set of difference equations resulting from the discretization of the continuous-time model. A commonly used method of discretization (forward difference) offers an incorrect relative order compared to exact discretization. The state and input sensitivity equations of the continuous-time model are used in computing the nominal closed-loop stability criteria. The nominal stability analysis is extended to the important cases of unmeasured states and uncertain model parameters. A numerical Lyapunov function is used to estimate closed-loop regions of attraction. A simulation example (a CSTR with input multiplicity) presented illustrates the analysis methods and closed-loop behavior.
