    Notes: Abstract The restricted primitive model is an electrically neutral, classical model consisting of hard spheres charged either +q or −q. We show that, by appropriately selecting the diameter of the hard spheres, the pressure when q=0 can be made equal to that for a fluid of Maxwell–Boltzmann point ions and an ideal Fermi gas of electrons. We compare the series expansion of these classical and quantum systems and find that, except for intermediate de Broglie density and moderate to strong electrical interaction strength, the restricted primitive model gives a reasonable representation of the pressure of the corresponding quantum system. Much of the current interest, however, has been focused on the above, excepted region.

    Notes: Abstract Molecular simulations of adsorption isotherms for hydrogen on graphite and graphitic slit pores are presented. The simulations employ the path integral isomorphism of Feynman to rigorously account for the quantum nature of the adsorbate. The isosteric heat of adsorption of para-hydrogen on planar graphite is computed from several different solid–fluid potential models and compared with experiment. The adsorption isotherm for hydrogen on the graphite basal plane was computed at 20 K and compared with experiment. Agreement with experiment is very good. Adsorption isotherms for hydrogen in slit pores of two different pore widths are computed at 20 K and compared with results from classical simulations. Quantum and classical isotherms exhibit qualitatively different behavior.

    Notes: There is an increasing body of evidence showing that, for a variety of copolymers, there are significant changes in the copolymer composition over the molecular weight distribution of the polymer. In this work, we have polymerized the copolymer poly(styrene-methyl methacrylate) using ethylaluminum sesquichloride as the initiator. The copolymers produced were fractionated using a semiprep gel permeation chromatograph. The composition of the fractions was determined using infrared spectroscopy. Results show that the percent methyl methacrylate of the copolymers was higher at both the low- and high-molecular-weight regions of the polymers.
