Notes: Glass transition temperature and depression in melting point methods are commonly used to determine the miscibility behavior of polymer/polymer blends, where at least one component of the mixture is semicrystalline. However, these methods often lead to ambiguous and even contradictory results, as can be shown by several examples. Furthermore, a comparison of the miscibility behavior of poly(vinyl chloride), poly(vinyl bromide), and poly(vinyl fluoride) with linear and branched polyesters indicates that small changes in the structure of the halogenated polymer and/or of the polyester lead to major changes in miscibility, indicating the subtle nature of the miscibility phenomenon and emphasizing difficulties in its control.

Notes: Aminosilanes hydrolyze rapidly in aqueous acidic solutions and exhibit good stability; however 1H NMR measurements indicate that γ-MPS (γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxy silane) hydrolyzes slowly and condenses rapidly under similar conditions. The rate constant of these two reactions depends upon the pH of the solution, and the rate constant of the condensation reaction also depends upon the initial γ-MPS concentration. The hydrolysis is faster and the condensation slower at low pH's. These factors explain why an induction period is observed before the adsorption of γ-MPS onto mica takes place and why it does not occur if the induction period is too long. Using the Lentz technique, it is also shown that the main species resulting from the condensation of a concentrated γ-MPS solution is a cyclic trimer or tetramer, in agreement with literature results.

Notes: A wide angle x-ray diffraction technique has been used to determine the orientation of mica flakes in composites. The mica used was a fine grade Phlogopite, and the polymers were polystyrene, polycarbonate and poly(vinyl chloride). Composite samples of varying mica contents and orientations were prepared. The x-ray method can give the orientation distribution function of mica flakes across and parallel to the surface of the sample. From this function, an average orientation parameter was calculated. The results show that there is no orientation of mica across the surface of the sample (the x-ray beam is normal to the surface), but that there is a strong orientation in a direction parallel to this surface, the average orientation parameter being strongly dependent upon the particle size of mica and mode of preparation.

Notes: High molecular weight plasticizers can be used if they have a low Tg and are miscible with PVC. For example, linear polyesters exhibit miscibility with PVC when their [CH2]/[COO] ratio is intermediate; in that range, as “miscibility window” has been found. However, the degree of miscibility of miscible polymer blends vary with the structure of the polymers involved and thier concentration. The miscibility of these systems is often assessed by the measurement of a single Tg as a function of composition. A careful examination of experimental data of polyester/chlorinated polymer blends, as well as the use of the free volume theory, indicates that several of these systems exhibit a cusp as a function of composition, which is characterized by a critical volume fraction and a critical temperature. Specific examples are given.
