    Notes: Positron lifetimes were measured for four kinds of polyethylene samples and were resolved into four components. The temperature dependence of the two longlived components was examined in detail. In agreement with other results, the longest lived component could be reasonably assigned to ortho-positronium located in amorphous regions. This component was shown to be sensitive to the defects in high-density polyethylene introducted in the course of its production. Both the intensity and the lifetime of the second longest lived component were structure insensitive, i.e., they did not change even on passing through the melting point. This component has been tentatively assigned to a positronium compound state. The effect of gamma-ray irradiation was also examined. Although the intensity (I4) of the longest lived component was reduced by the irradiation, correlation between I4 and the free radical concentration was poor, and the reduction in I4 caused by the irradiation is considered to be due to structure change and not to chemical reasons.

    Notes: Four kinds of epoxy resins: cresol novolac, tris-hydroxyphenylmethane, tetramethylbiphenol, and bisphenol A, were cured with phenol novolac epoxy resins. Characteristics of these epoxy compounds were studied by the positron annihilation lifetime (PAL) technique. Glass transition temperatures, thermal expansion coefficients, and volume of intermolecularspace holes among polymer chains were obtained from the lifetime, τ3, of the long-lived component of ortho-positronium. It was revealed that, at the glass transition temperature, Tg, the volume of the hole created among polymer chains expanded 1.4 times the volume at room temperature. The smaller flexural modulus of tris-hydroxyphenylmethane than that of the other samples was explained by the volume of intermolecular-space holes obtained from τ3. Aging effects were seen in the data of the intensities, I3, of ortho-positronium, which became smaller after heating the samples above Tg. I3 and τ3 were strongly affected by the density of cross-linkings, and their chemical structures. The larger the density of cross-linkings, the smaller I3 and higher Tg were obtained. Epoxy compounds with the higher water-absorption rates had larger intermolecular-space holes. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Commercial digitonin has been separated into its components using high-performance liquid chromatography and centrifugal countercurrent chromatography. The individual glucosides have been identified by californium-252 plasma desorption mass spectrometry, occasionally supplemented by hydrolysis and analysis of the liberated sugars and aglycones. Mass spectra of commercial digitonin that have appeared in the literature are discussed in the light of their complex nature. A new glycoside of molecular weight 1035 is described and a structure proposed.

    Notes: A cell growth factor protein (insulin) and/or a cell-adhesion protein (fibronectin) were immobilized on surface-hydrolyzed poly(methyl methacrylate) membranes. The growth of mouse fibroblast cells STO was accelerated by the immobilized insulin. This acceleration was enhanced by introduction of spacer arms. Coimmobilization of insulin and fibronectin was very effective for the acceleration of cell growth. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Novel polyetherurethaneureas which have been synthesized by the present authors were chosen for the substrate polymers, on which adhesion of platelets was investigated. The number of adhered platelets and the amount of serotonin released from platelets adhered on the polymers and the protein-coated polymers were determined by radioisotope method. Both of them were ehanced with increasing content of urea linkages in the polyetherurethaneureas. The platelet adhesion was discussed in terms of the denaturation of plasma proteins upon adsorption, which was determined by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. With increasing degree of protein denaturation, the platelet adhesion and the serotonin release were enhanced. This relationship was particularly evident in the case of albumin adsorption. It was shown that the surface properties of substrate polymers affect the protein adsorption, which in turn influences the adhesion of platelets.

    Notes: The local electronic structure around the core-ionized phosphorus and oxygen atoms in solid phase Na3PO4, (NaPO3)n and Li3PO4 compounds has been studied by XPS and x-ray excited Auger spectroscopy. Core level and valence band photoelectron spectra, as well as the O KLL Auger spectra have been measured using monochromated Al Kα excitation, while the high energy P KLV spectra have been excited using Mo-x-rays.From the similarity of the structures of the P KLV spectra it can be seen that the effect of the common tetrahedral symmetry is dominant while the effect due to the change of the cation is much smaller. This observation is supported by comparing the respective valence band photoelectron spectra to each other, and to the results obtained from cluster MO calculations.From the evaluation of the O KVV and O 1s spectra the oxygen Auger parameters have been derived and the 2p2p and 2s2p hole repulsion energies have been determined for each compound. The experimental values of the different Auger parameter shifts (Δα′, Δβ′) place the three oxyanions into the class of oxides, hydroxides and metallic anions instead of the class of non-metallic anions and indicates the low electronic polarizability (similar to that of SiO2) of these phosphorus oxyanions.
