    Notizen: Abstract Lichenothrix riddlei is reported from two widely separate localities in New Zealand. It was previously known only from the South Eastern states of U.S.A. Light and electron microscopy show its sterile fungal partner to belong to the ascomycetes. Apparently as a consequence of lichenization, the variation in breadth of the trichomes of theScytonema phycobiont is greater than normal. A thin, probably gelatinous layer, covering the fungal cells and the algal sheath in the interstices between them, can be demonstrated by electron microscopy. In the contact region with the algal cells, the otherwise two layered wall of the haustoria is reduced to one layer only. In the fungal protoplast conspicuous stacks of ER-like membranes can be found.

    Notizen: The specific refractive increment for statistical copolymers is shown to be colligative in nature for copolymers of styrene-methyl methacrylate thus giving direct evidence to support the assumption of Stockmayer et al. on the theory for light scattering in copolymers. The determination of the mole fraction of mer composition in copolymers by specific refractive increment measurements is shown to be a useful technique and nearly as precise as chemical analysis for carbon. The technique is restricted to soluble systems and is limited by the resolution of the measuring instrument.

    Notizen: Copolymerization of methyl alpha;--cyanoacrylate with five reference monomers gave values e = +2.1 and of log Q = 0.65, with much scatter in the latter value. Alternating copolymers are formed by copolymerization with monomers of e = -0.8 or less. Bulk copolymerization with such monomers could not be accomplished, as a rapid noncatalyzed polymerization occurred upon mixing even at 0°C. Random copolymers with methyl methacrylate could be prepared in bulk; those with ca. 10% methyl methacrylate had physical properties similar to the homopolymer of methyl α--cyanoacrylate, except that the heat distortion temperature was lowered 10-15°C. The alternating copolymers were more thermally stable than the random copolymers. Glass temperature values for alternating copolymers do not appear to agree with values predicted from equations for random copolymers.
