    Notes: Abstract We studied Dicranophorus sp., Platyias quadricornis (Ehrb.) and Rotaria tardigrada (Ehrb.). These rotifers, systematically distant from each other, show the same pattern of the catecholaminergic (CA-ergic) part of the nervous system. It is formed of a small (23–24), but steady number of neurons characteristic for each species. Three types of CA-ergic neurons are described. The sizes of neurons vary from to two to ten µm. The distribution of the brain neurons is correlated with body shape. Such a type of nervous system is topographically comparable to the concentrated orthogon of the flatworms.

    Notes: Abstract In 10 rotifer species from the subclasses Archeorotatoria (order Bdelloidea) and Eurotatoria (superorders Gnesiotrocha and Pseudotrocha) three patterns of catecholaminergic neurons are detected, namely: x-shaped, arch-shaped and ring-shaped. These brain complexes are developed independently and in a parallel fashion in different rotifer groups. The number of the brain catecholaminergic neurons varies from 6 to 11, constituting about 3–7% of the total number of the brain cells. The brain neuron pattern demonstrates a distinct bilateral symmetry.

    Notes: This article proposes a method for detecting the concentration of gold ions in solutions with high oxidation/reduction potential (ORP), such as aqua regia, a hypochlorite-iodine mixture, and a new proprietary liquid bromine carrier solution, by direct current anodic stripping voltammetry (DCASV). The working electrode is a graphite electrode impregnated with a mixture of epoxy resin and polyethylene amine. The article discusses: possible cause of a double stripping peak for gold appearing in voltammograms in aqua regia solution with electrolysis potentials less than -0.4 V; differences in coefficients of the working electrode's sensitivity in the above mentioned solutions. A relative standard deviation of the results in determining gold concentration in solutions of rock (ORP 〉 0.9 V), which were obtained by the proposed method and by atomic-absorption spectrophotometry, did not exceed 0.2.

    Notes: The stability of aromatic polyamide chains containing 1,7-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane units was investigated in dilute solution by viscometry and sedimentation analysis at 25°C. Traces of impurities in dimethylformamide bring about degradation of the polymer and formation of polyanions, which become manifest in the viscosity by the polyelectrolyte effect. Neutral salts suppress this effect. Degradation is not hindered in an inert atmosphere. The solutions in N,N-dimethylacetamide and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone are also unstable. No degradation occurs in solutions in tetrahydrofuran stabilized with 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol. Hence, reliable measurements of the molecular characteristics of this polymer can be carried out only in stabilized peroxide-free tetrahydrofuran.

    Notes: The treatment of HeLa subline (HeLa-B) cells with cycloheximide or Actinomycin D resulted in a rapid (∼ 1.5 h and ∼ 2.5 h, respectively) development of morphological and biochemical signs of apoptosis. The addition of fetal bovine serum to the cycloheximide-treated or Actinomycin D-treated cells suppressed the apoptotic reaction, as evidenced by the postponement of the DNA fragmentation for at least 9 and 5 h, respectively. A similar suppressive effect was observed upon the serum addition to cells undergoing abortive infection with poliovirus, which died of apoptosis in the absence of the serum. The serum appeared to exert its anti-apoptotic effect without any appreciable lag and even immediately blocked further progress of ongoing DNA fragmentation. The epidermal growth factor also suppressed, although less efficiently and more transiently, the apoptotic reaction promoted by the metabolic inhibitors. It is concluded that growth factors may affect, without modulating either transcription or translation, the balance of pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic activities at a final checkpoint, just preceding the irreversible effector step of apoptosis. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: To elucidate the mechanism of action of restriction endonucleases MvaI and EcoRII a study was made of their interaction with a set of synthetic substrates in which the heterocyclic bases or the sugar-phosphate backbone had been modified; individual nucleotide residues had been removed or replaced with hydrocarbon bridges, and mismatched base pairs had been introduced. The groups of atoms in the heterocyclic bases and the phosphates in the recognition site that produce the most significant influence on the functioning of endonucleases MvaI and EcoRII were discerned. Profound differences were found in the functioning of the MvaI and EcoRII neo-schizomers. The catalytic activity of EcoRII is significantly affected by any alteration in the recognition site structure and conformation, with a modification in one strand of the substrate causing the same decrease in the hydrolysis rate of both strands. Endonuclease MvaI is tolerant to a number of structural abnormalities; the latter sometimes affect only hydrolysis of one strand of the recognition site. The enzyme can preferentially cleave one of the substrate strands. Mismatched base pairs retard and sometimes block the hydrolysis. The effect depends on the particular enzyme, mismatch and its location.

    Notes: The lithium diisopropylamide (LDA) induced regioselective 1,3-rearrangement of 3- and 2- pyridyl phosphates into the corresponding 3-hydroxy-4-pyridyl-and 2-hydroxy-3-pyridylphosphonates has been observed and investigated. The rearrangement is proposed as a useful method for a directed introduction of a phosphoryl group into a hydroxypyridine nucleus.

    Notes: A method for detecting low concentrations of mercury ions with the help of direct current anodic stripping voltammetry (DCASV) is proposed. For this method, gold and gold-plated electrodes are used. To eliminate the influence of interfering organic surfactants, electrochemical method is used for the probe preparation. Less interference by inorganic substances is attained by the introduction of an additional state in the electrolysis at constant potential after pre-electrolysis, by which interfering elements are stripped from the deposit while mercury remains on the electrode. The lowest detection limit obtained was 0.16μg/L using a gold electrode and a graphite electrode impregnated with a mixture of an epoxy resin and polyethylenamine with a gold cover. The latter electrode can be used for fifty analyses without changing the gold covering. The proposed method was used for the analysis of food, sewage, and drinking water.

    Notes: An internal standard method is proposed in the stripping analysis of natural waters. The method consists of the introduction into the sample solution of a reference element and subsequent calculation of the concentration of several elements by the increase in the analytical signal from the reference element. Criteria of the reference element selection are given. Calculated proportionality factors k obtained with the use of solutions simulating sea and river waters under the same experimental conditions can be applied to the determination of copper(II), lead(II), and cadmium(II) in natural waters. The use of the internal standard method allows one to substantially shorten the time of analysis (3-5 minutes instead of 30-50 minutes) and to improve accuracy and reproducibility of the analytical data.
