Notes: Summary The response properties and gross morphologies of neurons that connect the medulla and midbrain in the butterfly Papilio aegeus are described. The neurons presented give direction-selective responses, i.e. they are excited by motion in the preferred direction and the background activity of the cells is inhibited by motion in the opposite, null, direction. The neurons are either maximally sensitive to horizontal motion or to slightly off-axis vertical upward or vertical downward motion, when tested in the frontal visual field. The responses of the cells are dependent on the contrast frequency of the stimulus with peak values at 5–10 Hz. The receptive fields of the medulla neurons are large and are most sensitive in the frontal visual field. Examination of the local and global properties of the receptive fields of the medulla neurons indicates that (1) they are fed by local elementary motion-detectors consistent with the correlation model and (2) there is a non-linear spatial integration mechanism in operation.

Notes: Abstract Biosynthesis of repeat-unit polysaccharides and N-linked glycans proceeds by sequential transfer of sugars from the appropriate sugar donor to an activated lipid carrier. The transfer of each sugar is catalysed by a specific glycosyltransferase. The molecular basis of the specificity of sugar addition is not yet well understood, mainly because of the difficulty of isolating these proteins. In this study, the aceA gene product expressed by Acetobacter xylinum, which is involved in the biosynthesis of the exopolysaccharide acetan, was overproduced in Escherichia coli and its function was characterised. The aceA ORF was subcloned into the expression vector pET29 in frame with the S·tag epitope. The recombinant protein was identified, and culture conditions were optimised for production of the soluble protein. The results of test reactions showed that AceA is able to transfer one α-mannose residue from GDP-mannose to cellobiose-P-P-lipid to produce α-mannose-cellobiose-P-P-lipid. AceA was not able to use free cellobiose as a substrate, indicating that the pyrophosphate-lipid moiety is needed for enzymatic activity.

Notes: A small-scale enclosure was constructed for characterizing the contribution of interior finish wall-lining materials to fire growth in compartments. The enclosure was based upon refinements to a design devised by scientists at the National Institute for Standards and Technology for quarter-scale modelling of room fire tests on interior-finish materials. A large volume of evidence is presented demonstrating how this small-scale enclosure could provide the information about surface flammability, heat release, smoke generation and contribution to fire growth that is required for a reasonable assessment of the fire performance of interior wall-finish materials.

Notes: The mass spectra of 3,8-dichloro-11H-dibenzo[c,f] [1,2]diazepine, the corresponding diazepin-11-01 and diazepin-11-one and their dihydro and N-oxide derivatives have been recorded. The most important fragmentation of the molecular ions of all diazepines studied was an initial loss of m/e 28, with further fragmentation depending on the 11-substituent. No general pathway was observed for the corresponding N-oxides and dihydro compounds.
