    Notes: Abstract Anal neosphincter formation with electrically stimulated gracilis muscle is used increasingly for the surgical treatment of fecal incontinence. An alternative to gracilis might be of interest if this muscle is not available. 30 semitendinosus muscles and 15 long heads of biceps femoris were investigated on human cadavers. In particular, the nerve and vascular supply of these muscles was studied, both representing basic factors for muscle transposition. The long head of biceps femoris m. was found to receive its dominant vascular supply from the first and second perforating artery and its nerve supply from one motor branch out of the sciatic nerve, both as described in literature. The examination of semitendinosus m., however, revealed new anatomical aspects in its vascular supply. In all cases semitendinosus m. was found to receive dominant vascular pedicles from the medial circumflex femoral artery close to the ischial tuberosity and the second perforating artery. The nerve supply consisted of two motor branches out of the sciatic nerve. Both muscles fulfilled several basic criterias for transposition to the anus. However, regarding these requirements, semitendinosus offered distinct advantages in comparison with the long head of biceps femoris. Due to its vascular and nerve topography, semitendinosus seems suitable to serve as an alternative to gracilis.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé La graciloplastie électro-stimulée est utilisée de plus en plus fréquemment dans le traitement chirurgical de l'incontinence anale. L'utilisation d'un autre muscle peut être intéressante si le muscle gracile n'est pas utilisable. 30 muscles semitendineux et 15 longs chefs du biceps fémoral ont été étudiés sur des cadavres humains. Ce travail a porté particulièrement sur l'innervation et la vascularisation de ces muscles, dont dépendent les possibilités de transposition. Le long chef du m. biceps fémoral recevait sa vascularisation principale de la première et de la deuxième artère perforante et son innervation d'une branche motrice venant du nerf sciatique, tel que cela est décrit dans la littérature. L'étude du m. semitendineux a montré de nouveaux aspects anatomiques dans sa vascularisation. Dans tous les cas ce muscle recevait sa vascularisation principale de l'artère circonflexe médiale près de la tubérosité ischiatique et de la deuxième a. perforante. Son innervation venait de deux branches motrices du nerf sciatique. Ces deux muscles répondaient aux critères nécessaires pour leur transposition comme néo sphincter. Cependant, compte-tenu de sa vascularisation et de son innervation, le m. semitendineux répond mieux aux impératifs anatomiques que le long chef du biceps et représente une alternative au muscle gracile pour la création d'un néo sphincter anal.

    Notes: A series of new water-soluble photoinitiators (PIs) for UV curing of water-borne systems was synthesized by covalent bonding of carbohydrate residues such as D-glucose, sucrose, maltose, 1-amino-D-sorbitol and D-gluconicacid-δ-lactone to the commercially available PI 2-hydroxy-1-[4-(2-hydroxy-ethoxy)phenyl]-2-methylpropan-1-one (Darocur 2959) (1). In addition, new functional derivatives of 1 containing tosyl- or chloride residues as well as primary or secondary amino groups were prepared. Preliminary photocalorimetric tests of the activity demonstrated excellent efficiencies of the PIs in a commercial water-based acrylate formulation exceeding the photoactivity of the reference PI (1) substantially. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Hydrophilic silicone rubbers have been prepared using allyl derivatives of glucose and sucrose resp. as unsaturated components in crosslinking of commercially avaliable RTV silicone components. Silicone rubbers with good tissue tolerance were obtained by covalent bonding of modified SiO2 fillers to the silicone matrix as well as by application of SiO2 fillers modified with anticoagulants.

    Notes: Quaternary ammonium salts were immobilized on hydrophilic gels based on sucrose methacrylates (SM) and tested for their antibacterial properties. The cross-linked polymers were prepared by copolymerization of monomer-SM mixtures with 4-vinylpyridine and subsequent quaternization with 1-bromoctane and 1-bromoctadecan and by esterification of SM gels with 3-pyridine carboxylic acid chloride and quaternization. In addition, immobilized quaternary salts bonded by hydrophobic as well as by hydrophilic spacers were synthesized by esterification of SM gels with 11-bromundecanoic acid chloride and the tetraethylene glycol-based acid chloride 13c, respectively, and subsequent reaction of the halogen-substituted gels with tertiary amines. Suspension tests for antibacterial properties of the immobilized bactericides against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Micrococcus luteus demonstrated high activity of the quaternary salts bonded by the hydrophobic spacer. Advantageously, these insoluble bactericides can be applicated without contamination of the substrate; they can be removed easily and used repeatedly. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The redox, free radical-initiated graft polymerization of butyl acrylate onto chromium (III)-crosslinked collagen has been investigated previously. In the experiments reported here we set out to determine whether true grafting had occurred and, if so, the molecular weight of the synthetic polymer that was grafted to the collagen. The butyl acrylate grafted product was successively extracted with acetone and ethyl acetate to remove homopolymers. The solvent-extracted product was then subjected to enzymatic degradation, followed by chloroform fractionation, and finally gel permeation chromatography of the chloroform-soluble fraction. Viscosity studies of the final fractionated product indicated that the molecular weight was about 1 million. Viscosity studies of the two homopolymers extracted with acetone and ethyl acetate show that the molecular weights of these homopolymers were somewhat less than that of the isolated polymer-peptide fragment. The fractionated polymer-peptide unit contained 2.83% amino acids, indicating that there are about 288 amino acids in the peptide attached to the polymer molecule. This polymer is composed of approximately 8100 monomer units. The IR spectra confirmed that this fraction is principally poly(butyl acrylate) with amide, OH, and NH absorption bands contributed by the peptide. The isolation and characterization of the polymer-peptide fragment provided proof of graft polymerization onto the collagen molecule.

    Description / Table of Contents: The atomic short range order in molten antimony at 620, 670 und 830°C was investigated with an improved experimental technique and an improved calculation method. The results can be explained with the assumption, that the melt is built up of double layers with a structure similar to that of black phosphorus. However, the difference between the two shortest atomic distances within these double layers is not as large as in black phosphorus. The stacking of the double layers seems to be similar to that in the structure of GeS. From the asymmetry of the first maximum of the atomic distribution curve it can be estimated, that the double layers are in the average composed of about 30 atoms. The shortest atomic distance is 3.03 Å.
    Notes: Die atomare Nahordnung im geschmolzenen Antimon wurde bei 620, 670 und 830°C mit einer verbesserten experimentellen Technik und mit verbesserten Auswertemethoden bestimmt. Die Ergebnisse legen die Annahme des Aufbaus der Schmelze aus Doppelschichten mit einer Struktur, welche der des schwarzen Phosphors sehr ähnlich ist, nahe. Im Unterschied dazu ist jedoch die Differenz zwischen den zwei kürzesten Abständen innerhalb dieser Doppelschichten nicht so groß. Die Übereinanderlagerung der Doppelschichten scheint der im Gitter des GeS nahe zu stehen. Aus der Asymmetrie des ersten Maximums der Atomverteilungskurve läßt sich abschätzen, daß die Doppelschichten im Mittel aus etwa 30 Atomen aufgebaut sind. Der kürzeste Atomabstand ist 3,03 Å.
