Notes: Abstract Seventeen strains of Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar viceae specific to the lentil (Lens culinaris L.) were screened, using the high-yielding lentil cultivar L 4076, for their tolerance to three levels of NO inf3 sup- : 0, 4, and 8 mM NO inf3 sup- . Preliminary screening of this symbiosis for nodulation and N fixation in the presence of NO inf3 sup- showed significant variations among the strains. The number of nodules decreased and nitrogenase activity was depressed in all strains in the presence of NO inf3 sup- . Strains L-1-87, L-27-89, L-33-89, and L-40-89 tolerated 8 mM NO inf3 sup- . Four strains, three tolerant of NO inf3 sup- (L-1-87, L-27-89, and L-33-89), and one sensitive (L-11-89) to NO inf3 sup- , were selected from preliminary screening and used in a pot experiment to assess the symbiosis in the presence of 6 mM NO inf3 sup- at three stages of plant growth, viz., 40 days, 60 days, and at the final harvest. In general, the weight of nodules and C2H2 reduction activity was significantly higher after 60 days than after 40 days. Inoculation with strain L-1-87 produced the maximum number of nodules, and root and shoot biomass both in the presence and the absence of NO inf3 sup- . Nitrate reductase activity in the tops and nodules was assayed only after 60 days and did not show significant variations among strains and NO inf3 sup- treatments. The grain yields for all strains except L-11-89 were significantly higher in the presence of NO inf3 sup- than in the absence of NO inf3 sup- , indicating that tolerant strains contributed symbiotically fixed N to the plant's N pool, resulting in an additive effect on yield. Inoculation with strain L-1-87 produced the maximum grain yield and this strain appears to have potential use as an inoculant in the presence of high levels of soil N.

Notes: Summary Chickpea cultivars (Cicer arietinum L.) and their symbiosis with specific strains of Rhizobium spp. were examined under salt stress. The growth of rhizobia declined with NaCl concentrations increasing from 0.01 to 2% (w : v). Two Rhizobium spp. strains (F-75 and KG 31) tolerated 1.5% NaCl. Of the 10 chickpea cultivars examined, only three (Pusa 312, Pusa 212, and Pusa 240) germinated at 1.5% NaCl. The chickpea — Rhizobium spp. symbiosis was examined in the field, with soil varying in salinity from electrical conductivity (EC) 4.5 to EC 5.2 dSm-1, to identify combinations giving satisfactory yields. Significant interactions between strains and cultivars caused differential yields of nodules, dry matter, and grain. Four chickpea — Rhizobium spp. combinations, Pusa 240 and F-75 (660 kg ha-1), Pusa 240 and IC 76 (440 kg ha-1), Pusa 240 and KG 31 (390 kg ha-1), and Pusa 312 and KG 31 (380 kg ha-1), produced significantly higher grain yields in saline soil.

Notes: Flatter velocity profiles and more uniform thermal environents are extremely desirous factors for improved performance in flow reactors and heat exchangers. One means of achieving this in laminar flow systems is to use mixers and flow inverters. These improve performance but at higher initial and operating costs. This paper introduces a new and more effective device for flow inversion which is achieved by changing the direction of centrifugal force in helically-coiled tubes. Transient response experiments carried out under the conditions of both negligible and significant molecular diffusion reveal drastic narrowing of the residence time distribution (RTD). The effectiveness of the present device can be assessed by the fact that even at a Dean number of 3 the value of dispersion number as low as 0.0013 is obtained under the condition of significant diffusion, and in the case of negligible diffusion the value of dimensionless time at which the first element of tracer appears at the outlet is as high as 0.85.

Notes: With a view to study their antiviral and antitubercular activity, ten new 4-aryl substituted thiosemicarbazones of 2-formyl benzofuran and 4-methoxy naphthaldehyde have been prepared. The preparation of sixteen new hydrazones of 3-aryl, thiazolidine-2,4-dione and 5-carboxymethyl-3-aryl, thiazolidine-2,4-dione and ten new substituted guanidines has also been accomplished from these thiosemicarbazones.

Notes: Some organo-Main-Group-IV-element compounds of steroids of the type R3M(COL), R2Sn(COL)2 and (R3M)2(HDCA) (where R = Me or Ph; M = Si, Sn and Pb; HCOL = cholest-5-en-3β-ol; H3DCA = 3α, 12α-dihydroxy-5β-cholan-24-oic acid), have been synthesized. The structures of these compounds have been investigated by vibrational, mass, NMR (1H, 13C, 29Si, 119Sn and 207Pb) and 119Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy. For Me3Sn(COL) both in solution and in the solid state an associated structure with distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry around tin and three-coordinated oxygen atoms is postulated. Discrete tetrahedral geometries are assigned to Ph3M(COL) complexes and to R2Sn(COL)2 complexes in solution. The latter compounds probably have an associated distorted trigonal bipyramidal structure in the solid state. The complexes (Ph3M)2(HDCA) also have tetrahedral geometries around the central atoms M in solution, but for (Ph3Sn)2(HDCA) a polymeric structure with both tin atoms pentacoordinated in the solid state is proposed.

Notes: Energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) analysis of manganese compounds has been carried out. A significant dependence of the Mn Kα and Kβ x-ray yields per incident photon and of the Kβ/Kα ratio on the valence state of manganese in these compounds was observed. The measurement of attenuation coefficients of these compounds, which are used in absorption corrections in XRF analysis, also showed similar effects. These results imply that the EDXRF elemental analysis results have inherent inaccuracies of the order of 10%.

Notes: The newly synthesized η-cyclopentadienyltitanium complexes of 1,3-dihydro-1, 3-dioxo-α-(substituted)-2H-isoindole-2-acetates have been screened for their toxicity against Columba livia (Gmelin) (the blue rock pigeon) and exhibit moderate toxicity towards this non-target bird. The bis- derivatives have been observed to be generally more active than the mono- ones, indicating the dominant contribution of ligands towards toxicity compared with cyclopentadienyl rings and chlorine atoms.
