Notes: Injection molding of polyethylene was carried out using molds that introduce axial elongational flow during the filling process, As compared with conventional injection-molding methods, the present technique yields polyethylene materials having higher mechanical strengths (σ ≈ 150 MPa). The σ-value of the moldings can be systematically monitored by adequately varying the elongational flow through modification of the mold geometry. Geometrical features of the volume containing the melt before injection as well as geometry of the die, the extruder, and the inlet influence the overall elongational flow, and thus, the mechanical strength of the moldings.

Notes: In the first part of this series, the influence of mold geometry was examined with reference to the improvement of the mechanical properties of elongational flow injection-molded polyethylene. In the present study (Part 2), processing parameters have been investigated and the physical properties of the moldings examined. It is confirmed that mainly two parameters, the temperature of the melt and the pressure on the solidifying mold, govern the injection process. Results are discussed in terms of the molecular orientation that is developed during the filling process and depends on the temperature of the melt. The application of high pressures leads to a pressure-induced crystallization effect that freezes in the molecular orientation within the mold.

Notes: Highly oriented linear polyethylene was prepared by elongational flow injection molding. The changes in crystal orientation were investigated as a function of temperature by real-time wide-angle X-ray diffraction. Additionally, the influence of molecular weight upon the microstructure and the changes in orientation, during heating near the melting point, and after cooling have been examined. A shish-kebab structure is inferred for the high molecular weight samples (Mw≥105) from SAXS observations, while for samples with Mw〈105 only an oriented lamellar structure is found. Consequently, a higher thermal stability is shown by the higher molecular weight samples. Furthermore, a recovery of crystal orientation on rapid cooling of the samples from the melt is only observed for samples with Mw≥105. The results are discussed in terms of a preferential recrystallization of chain-folded lamellae, on cooling, onto the shish fibrils which survive at high temperature.

Notes: Scattered data exist in the literature on the chemical reactions which occur during mechanical contact. It is our contention that these reactions occur as a direct result of the high temperatures generated at the contact interface, due to the dissipation of mechanical energy. A theoretical analysis is used to identify and rank the various sources of heat generation during repetitive impact or sliding. New data, on both filled and unfilled polymers and elastomers, supported by data from the literature, are used to show that the resultant temperature rise causes reactions at the interface; the extents of these reactions depend on the polymer structure and the magnitude of the temperature rise. Several ways of reducing the magnitude of this temperature rise are discussed.
