    Notes: Summary The objective was to find the optimum range of water contents for inducing better growth, physiological efficiency and yield potential of barley plants (Hordeum vulgare L. var. K18). A pot culture experiment was conducted in the Division of Crop Physiology and Biochemistry Kanpur-2. The plants were subjected to various soil moisture stresses,i.e., 0.15, 0.30, 0.45, 0.60 and 0.75 atm tension throughout the crop growth period measured by irrometers. Plants maintained at 0.45 soil moisture tension required 19.07 litre of water and had the best water use efficiency (1765 mg dm/litre of water) which favourably influenced the leaf water balance (85.9%), plant growth as measured by plant height (85.4 cm) and tiller production (35.6) per hill, photosynthetic efficiency (2.185 mg CO2/g dm/h), grain number (722) and grain yield (33.7 g) per hill while plants irrigated at a tension greater than 0.45 SMT did not develop as well. However, protein and gluten percentage increased gradually with the subsequent increase in soil moisture tension. On the other hand respiration rate (2.090 mg CO2/g dm/hr) and leaf area (4375 cm2) were recorded to be the highest at 0.60 and 0.30 atm SMT respectively. Thus it is suggested that for reaping high harvest of barley crop, the physiological need of water (19.07 litre) in total of plant life should be made available through scheduled irrigation based on maintenance of plant at 0.45 SMT from seeding to maturity.

    Notes: The stereochemistry of trans- and cis-2, 4-dimethyl-tetrahydroquinolines, 6 and 7 were derived from 1H-NMR. studies. These were converted respectively into trans- and cis-5, 6-dihydro-4, 6-dimethyl-4H, 8H-pyrido [3, 2, 1-de]phenanthridin-8-ones 18 and 20 by a Pschorr reaction on the anthranilamides 10 and 15. Bromophenanthridones 19 and 21 were similarly prepared from bromoanthranilamides 12 and 17. Detailed 1H-NMR. studies on 18 and 20 indicated axial disposition of the methyl groups at C(2) in both compounds in contrast to the situation in 6 and 7. This is presumably to avoid adverse CH3CO group interaction of the A (1, 3) type. The severity of this is gauged by the preference of 20 for a normally forbidding 1, 3-diaxial orientation of two methyl groups. X-ray crystallographic studies on 19 and 20 confirm the stereochemical assignments.

    Notes: A simple HPLC procedure has been developed for the simultaneous determination of a mixture of standard carbaryl, carbofuran, carbendazim, dimethoate, malathion and methyl parathion from a spiked agricultural soil sample. The pesticide mixture has been extracted using methanol-water. A concave gradient elution with acetonitrile-phosphate buffer for 15 min followed by linear elution for 5 min, using a wavelength of 224 nm for detection, has been found to resolve the mixture efficiently.

    Notes: A new technique for the modification of PAN fibers has evolved, in which the starting precursor material is impregnated with an aliphatic carboxylic acid, as well as KMnO4. The bimodification of PAN, attempted by us for the first time, is aimed at achieving dual advantages in plasticization effect, as well as in a catalytic effect in a single treatment. The unmodified, unimodified, and bimodified precursors have been characterized for their mechanical, thermal, and physical behavior during various stages of processing to carbon fibers. These results are discussed in detail. The study further shows an 18% improvement in the mechanical properties of carbon fibers, prepared from bimodified precursor, as compared to that of unmodified precursor. One of the reasons for such improvement is the lowering in diameter of PAN fibers and in the resulting carbon fibers. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Surface of the carbon fibers developed from PAN (polyacrylonitrile) has been modified using such methods as air oxidation, nitric acid treatment, and anodic (electrolytic) oxidation. By choosing optimum treatment parameters, the tensile strength of such fibers has been found to increase by about 60 percent over that of the untreated value. A quantitative estimation of the surface groups formed during the treatment shows an increase in number with severity of the treatment. Further, removal of these functional groups from the fiber surface during degassing at 1000°C also influences the mechanical properties of the carbon fibers considerably. Results have been discussed in detail.
