Notes: The tetra(tert-butyl)[14]annuleno[14]annulene 1 is transformed, via alkali metal reduction, into its radical monoanion, dianion, radical trianion, and tetraanion. The paramagnetic species are characterized by ESR and ENDOR spectroscopy and the diamagnetic species by 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Well-resolved ESR and NMR spectra can only be obtained, if the reduction is carefully monitored. For the interpretation of the data, the ions derived from the structurally related [14]- and [22]annulenes 3 and 5 as well from the tetra(tert-butyl)[14]annuleno[18]annulene 2 serve as suitable model compounds. While the behavior of the neutral annulenoannulene 1 is governed by that of the [14]annulene-subunit, the corresponding ionic systems can best be described as macrocyclic perimeters. This outcome can be rationalized by the nodal properties of the frontier MO's.

Notes: A model of a perturbed n-membered perimeter (n = 4N + 2) is used to interpret the ESR.-data for the radical anions of symmetrical tetra-t-butyl-didehydro[n]annulenes with n = 14, 18, 22 and 26 (N = 3, 4, 5 and 6). The singly occupied orbital of such radical anions correlates with one of the doubly degenerate, lowest antibonding perimeter MO's which have been classified as symmetric (ΨS) or antisymmetric (ΨA) with respect to the mirror plane passing through two opposite centres and perpendicular to the plane of the perimeter. The relevant MO is ΨS for n = 14 (N = 3) and 22 (N = 5), but ΨA for N = 18 (N = 4) and 26 (N = 6), in accordance with the prediction of the model. It has been shown that the introduction of two symmetrically placed triple bonds into a (4N + 2)-membered perimeter should stabilize ΨS and destabilize ΨA when N is odd, whereas the reverse should hold when N is even.

Notes: Annulenoannulenes formally consist of two annulenes fused together. Hitherto, almost all the known representatives of this class of compounds were the strongly dehydrogenated forms, containing a few triple bonds and several cumulated double bonds. Besides ortho-annelated dehydroannulenoannulenes also such compounds containing bridges made up of two or four carbon atoms (“acetylene-cumulene” annulenoannulenes) were obtained by multistep syntheses. Most dehydroannulenoannulenes are stable and form colored crystals. In addition to dehydro[4n+2]annuleno[4n+2] annulenes with 14-, 18-, and 22-membered individual rings, two dehydro[4n]annuleno[4n+2]annulenes with 16- and 14-, and 16- and 18-membered rings have also been synthesized. Planar combinations of two [4n]-rings of this type and size are not known. - The dehydrogentated[14]annuleno[14]annulene containing a bridge of two carbon atoms has been studied in detail; however, the problem of the induction of a diamagnetic ring current in compounds of this type has still not been completely clarified.

Notes: Anomalous polarization (ρ = 3/4 ˜∞) has been observed in the resonance Raman spectra of some acetylenecumulene dehydro annulenes of a D2h rectangular configuration. Because of no orbital degeneracy, the observed anomaly may certainly be explained by the vibronic coupling of the resonant level with nearby states. From the nature of those relevant electronic levels, the anomalous lines are assigned to the B1g modes of vibration. For a typical anomalous polarization case, the polarization dispersion and excitation profile have been investigated.
