Notes: Abstract The influence of the contained wall on the drag of a sphere moving through a non-Newtonian fluid is analysed in this work separately for the low Reynolds number and the high Reynolds number regions. In the former, we make use of the two-concentric-sphere model. It is predicted that the wall effect will decrease with the increase of the shear-thinning anomaly and this is in a reasonable agreement with the available experimental data and correlations. The wall effect in the high Reynolds number region is analysed in this work using the cell model (used to study the motion of an assemblage of solid spheres) and the predictions are in satisfactory agreement with the available empirical correlation for non-Newtonian fluids.

Notes: Abstract The stability behaviour of heterogeneous drops indicates that, for liquid-liquid dispersions, we may have to modify the stability criterion to incorporate either the rheological characteristics of the dispersion or its cohesion or both.

Notes: Summary A model has been developed for the flow of a non-Newtonian fluid past a porous sphere. The drag force exerted on a porous sphere moving in a power-law fluid is obtained by an approximate solution of equations of motion in the creeping flow regime. It is predicted that the effect of the pseudoplastic anomaly on the drag force is more pronounced at large porosity parameters.

Notes: The influence of the addition of drag reducing polymers and fibers on two transport processes in mechanically agitated liquid systems is examined. The first one concerns the determination of mixing times, which were found to be insignificantly to moderately increased in the drag reducing systems. The second one concerns the determination of the critical RPM at which complete suspension of solid particles occurs. It was shown that this was unaffected in the drag reducing systems. The results of this work can be applied to fermentation processes, biological reactors with flocs, and metallurgical processes. The theoretical implications of this work are to be seen in the association of polymeric and fibrous drag reducing additives with different parts of the turbulent spectrum.

Notes: The influence of polymer additives upon the gas-liquid mass transfer in stirred tanks is examined. While the addition of sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose brings about a reduction of the overall liquid side mass transport coefficient which is in line with the predictions by earlier works, the reduction of kLa in polyacrylamide solutions of equal viscosity is much stronger. This is explained by the viscoelasticity of the PAA solutions, and an empirical correlation is proposed.
