Notes: The Heck reaction allows the synthesis of monomers in a one-step reaction. Catalyzed by Pd, bromoarenes are reacted with ethylene to form substituted styrenes and symmetrical stilbenes. Unsymmetrical stilbenes are obtained from substituted bromoarenes and styrenes. Substituted hydroquinones and terephthalic acids are also available in high yields. Poly(1,4-phenylenevinylene) is obtained starting from 4-bromostyrene.

Notes: The synthesis and phase behaviour of azo dye containing liquid crystalline side group copolymers are described. These Copolymers show the same electro-optical effects as low molar mass guest-host systems. Their macroscopic oriented nematic structure can be frozen in below the glass transition temperature resulting in a polymer film with dichroic properties. The behaviour of the copolymers (phase behaviour, surface and electric field orientation) can be improved via mixtures with low molar mass liquid crystals.

Notes: The syntheses and properties of a series of para-linked aromatic homopolyesters with 2,2′-dimethylbiphenylylene units are described. In the 2,2′-dimethyl-substituted biphenylylene unit the phenyl rings are forced into a non-coplanar conformation, which decreases the interchain interactions. The combination of such a biphenylylene unit with a monosubstituted unit further reduces the regularity of the substituents along the polyester backbone. As a result, soluble and completely amorphous liquid-crystalline (LC) aromatic polyesters with low phase transition temperatures are obtainable. Ternary solutions, consisting of a soluble aromatic LC polyester, a conventional randomly coiled thermoplastic and chloroform as solvent, can be used for the preparation of films and fibers.

Notes: Liquid-crystalline copolymers with covalently attached dichroic dyes were synthesized and characterized. Copolymers with high anthraquinone and trisazo-dye content were obtained by copolymerization of dye monomers with 4-cyanophenyl 4-(6-acryloyloxyhexyloxy)benzoate (1) and 6-acryloyloxyhexyl 4-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl)benzoate (2). Particular attention is given to the influence of the dye content and the dye structure on the liquid-crystalline behavior of the copolymers.

Notes: Synthesis, thermal properties and solubility behaviour of para-linked aromatic homopolyesters containing non-coplanar 1,1′-binaphthyl-4,4′-ylene units are described. By combining such binaphthylylene units with monosubstituted phenylene units, crystallization can be suppressed and thermotropic liquid-crystalline polyesters with glass transition temperatures (Tg) up to 190°C are obtainable. The liquid-crystalline order is maintained below Tg in an anisotropic glass. The polyesters show good solubility in common organic solvents, such as chloroform or tetrahydrofuran.

Notes: Trifluoromethyl-, pentafluoroethyl- and other perfluoroalkylbenzenes (2a-d, 4 and 3) were prepared by the reaction of the corresponding aromatic halides with perfluorocarboxylic acids in the presence of copper(I) iodide. These products were modified by oxidation or (and) substitution reactions and subsequently polymerized to give perfluoroalkyl-substituted polyamides, polyesters and poly(thio-1,4-phenylene)s showing good solubility.

Notes: The arylation of monomers for high-performance polymers is described. The reaction of dibenzoyl peroxide with various 1,4-disubstituted benzene derivatives results in phenylation. Minimization of side reactions is discussed. The Ni-promoted reaction of Grignard compounds with iodoarenes was used to introduce the phenyl, biphenyl, and naphthyl substituent.

Notes: Thermotropic liquid-crystalline poly(1,4-phenylene terephthalate)s with phenylalkyl side chains were synthesized. The influence of this novel type of substituent on the thermal properties and solubility behavior is discussed. In common solvents soluble, liquid-crystalline polyesters with low transition temperatures were obtained when the phenylalkyl substituent was introduced in combination with a bulky substituent or when both phenyl rings were substituted with phenylalkyl side chains. When poly(1,4-phenylene terephthalate) is only monosubstituted with a phenylalkyl substituent in the 1,4-phenylene unit, the polyesters have melting temperatures above 310°C and are only soluble in solvents such as p-chlorophenol.

Notes: The synthesis and structure-property relations of a number of novel substituted paralinked aromatic homopolyamides and copolyamides are described. The synthesis of the polyamides was carried out by polycondensation of activated N,N'-bis-(trimethylsilyl) substitued aromatic diamines and aromatic diacid chlorides. In order to improve the solubility and to lower melting temperatures, novel arylsubstituted terephthalic acids moieties, such as p-terphenyl-2,5-dicarboxylic acid and o-terphenyl-2,5-dicarboxylic acid, were used in combination with substituted and noncoplanar diamines. Depending on the chemical structure, polyamides with very high solubility (up to 40% w/w) in polar aprotic solvents such as N,N-dimethylacetamide without the addition of inorganic salts were obtained. Lyotropic liquid crystalline behavior was observed for the first time in polyamides which contain noncoplanar biphenylene units.

Notes: The synthesis, characterization, and structure - property relations of aromatic polyesters with dicyanovinyl substituents is presented. Two comparable series of polyesters based on 3,4-dihydroxybenzylidenemalononitrile and 3,4-dihydroxy-5-methoxybenzylidenemalononitrile were prepared. As aromatic diacid components, terephthalic acid, phenylterephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, and 2-phenylisophthalic acid were used. The polyesters were prepared by solution polycondensation. GPC investigations revealed the existence of substantial amounts of defined cyclic products. These cycles could be isolated by preparative GPC. The polyesters are soluble in common low boiling organic solvents, particularly the phenyl-substituted ones. The polyesters are amorphous and have glass transition temperatures between 140 and 170°C. The absorption maxima are in the 306-322 nm range. The cut-off wavelength is between 400 and 428 nm. The polyesters with methoxy substitutent have generally the absorptions at longer wavelength. The refractive index of thin films of these polyesters were between 1.61 and 1.63 at 632.8 nm. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
