Notes: The ultrasonic attenuation in dilute polymer solutions is treated in the framework of the Kirkwood diffusion equation. A Rouse-Zimm type relaxation behaviour of the ultrasonic attenuation results from the calculations, and a relationship between the intrinsic shear and bulk viscosity is derived.

Notes: In the framework of the Edwards-Grant model, the ultrasonic attenuation of concentrated polymer solutions is calculated. Entanglements between the chains change the frequency behaviour of the ultrasonic attenuation from ∼ω-1/2zu∼ω-3/4

Notes: A simple model of the x-ray Kα emission spectrum of copper metal has been proved to fit the experimental distribution curve of diffracted intensity fairly well, after correcting for profile distortion due to the spectrometer geometry and the diffraction process. Each Kα line can be described by a doublet of overlapping dispersion curves of different height and width. Although the physical relevance of the model is not clear at present, the simple analytical expression of the spectrum may be useful for some problems in x-ray diffractometry.

Description / Table of Contents: The optimized ROUSE-ZIMM-theory by BIXON and ZWANZIG is used to derive consistently viscoelastic relaxation times of chain models including the hydrodynamic interaction and excluded volume. The intrinsic viscosity is calculated on the basis of these relaxation time spectra.

Notes: Resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) of 16O2X3∑g - (ν = 0) through (3sσg)d 1Πg, (ν = 0) by using (2 + 1) one-colour photons is reported. This REMPI process, already observed and analysed by other authors at low pressure and low rotational temperature with mass spectrometry detection, is used to test our first detector of ionizations. Experimental difficulties have led to the design of an original arrangement of electrodes to collect electrons at room temperature and 1 Torr pressure of static molecular oxygen. A calculated spectrum is compared with the observed REMPI spectrum. The calculation uses the polarizability tensor and takes into account the competition between ionization and predissociation of the Rydberg state.

Notes: Characteristics of gel permeation chromatograms are investigated for three molecular distribution functions assuming a linear relation between elution volume and the logarithm of solute molecular weight. The average molecular weight, Mgpc, determined by the peak position of a chromatogram lies between the Mw and Mn for a polydisperse polymer.

Notes: The product gzbZa is weight-averaged over the distribution of molecular species in a polydisperse polymer possessing randomly distributed trifunctional branch points. This permits comparison between branched and nonbranched polydisperse polymers of certain physical properties that depend upon the relative degree of polymerization, z, and upon the ratio of branched to nonbranched molecule mean-square radii, g = Rbr2/Rl2. Values of a, b, and γ (a branching index) are chosen for specific physical reasons and the computed ratios, \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ (1 - \gamma )^a \int_0^\infty {g_z ^b z^a } W_z dz/\int_0^\infty {z^{a + 1} e^{ - z} dz} $\end{document} are tabulated. The distribution function for the polydisperse polymer possessing randomly distributed trifunctional branch points is restated in terms of a modified Bessel function of the first kind. This form is of use since properties of the Bessel function are known and the tabulated values of this function are generally available.
