    Principles of Integrated Instruction for Engagement in Reading (1998)

    Notes: Abstract Our purpose in this article is to propose a set of design principles to serve as a structural framework for enhancing engagement in reading. We provide a rationale for our emphasis on engagement, which we believe is an important aim of reading instruction. We discuss the sources of the proposed design principles. These design principles consist of a set of features of the classroom context including: conceptual themes, real-world interactions, self-direction, interesting texts, social collaboration, self-expression, cognitive strategy instruction, time for engaged reading, and coherence. We present empirical support from the educational psychology literature for each principle. For illustration, we provide a brief depiction of each principle functioning within a framework of Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI). We emphasize that each principle is dependent on several others, and we describe how the functioning of each principle is contingent on the occurrence of several affiliated principles in the vignettes of CORI.

Preparation and Properties of Esters of Dithiopropionic AcidThe orange colored title compounds C2H5—CS—SR with R = CH3, C2H5, C(CH3)3, and CH2—C6H5 have been prepared in one-pot synthesis by reaction of ethyl bromide with magnesium followed by CS2 insertion and alkylation with the corresponding alkyl halide. Their electron absorption, infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance, and mass spectra are communicated.
    Notes: Die orangefarbene Titelverbindungen C2H5—CS—SR mit R = CH3, C2H5, C(CH3)3 und CH2—C6H5 wurden im Eintopfverfahren durch Umsetzung von Ethylbromid mit Magnesium, anschließender CS2-Insertion und Alkylierung mit dem entsprechenden Alkylhalogenid hergestellt. Ihre Elektronenabsorptions-, Infrarot-, Kernresonanz- und Massenspektren werden mitgeteilt.

Crystal and Molecular Structure of the Methyl EsterThe title compound C6H5—CO—CS—SCH3 crystallizes with Z = 2 in the triclinic space group P1 with cell dimensions (-60°C) a = 6.236(4) Å, b = 7.972(2) Å, c = 9.589(4) Å, α = 88.42(3)°, β = 75.39(5)°, γ = 81.54(4)°. The structure has been determined from single crystal X-ray data measured at -60°C and refined to R = 0.085 and Rw = 0.087 for 2307 independent reflections. With nearly 20° the C=O bond is turned out of the plane of the phenyl ring.
    Notes: Die Titelverbindung C6H5—CO—CS—SCH3 kristallisiert triklin mit Z = 2 in der Raumgruppe P1 mit den Gitterdimensionen (-60°C) a = 6,236(4) Å, b = 7,972(2) Å, c = 9,589(4) Å, α = 88,42(3)°, β = 75,39(5)°, γ = 81,54(4)°. Die Kristallstruktur wurde aus bei -60°C vermessenen röntgenographischen Einkristalldaten unter Verwendung von 2307 symmetrieunabhängigen Reflexen bestimmt und bis auf Zuverlässigkeitsfaktoren von R = 0,085 und Rw = 0,087 verfeinert. Im Molekül ist die C=O-Bindung etwa 20° aus der Ebene des Phenylrings herausgedreht.

    Notes: Die bisher unbekannten dunkelvioletten Titelverbindungen CH3—CO—CS—SR mit R = CH3, C2H5 und das tiefgelb gefärbte CH3—CO—CS—SCH2—C6H5 wurden durch Umsetzung des entsprechenden Dithiopropionsäureesters mit SeO2 hergestellt. Sie sind stark licht- und luftempfindlich.Die Ester wurden mit Elektronenabsorptions-, Infrarot-, Kernresonanz- und Massenspektren charakterisiert.Die Darstellung von Derivaten der Trithiopyruvinsäure nach verschiedenen Verfahren gelang nicht.
