Notes: We investigated the thermal aftereffect of 383 K annealing of longitudinal recording media through the structural analysis of all-ones patterns observed by magnetic force microscopy (MFM). The transition width increased by 31% after annealing, and the peak height of the MFM signal decreased by 36% even at a low linear recording density of 50 kFCI. The root mean square (rms) values of the MFM signal were reduced after annealing as the recording density rose to 200 kFCI, but at 250 kFCI or higher, the rms value did not change and large magnetic clusters appeared in the tracks. The growth of nonperiodic magnetic clusters after annealing was investigated through statistical analysis. The written bits were subtracted by using a two-dimensional fast Fourier transformation (FFT) method. The number of clusters with a diameter of less than 150 nm decreased after annealing, while the number of larger clusters increased. Also, the average cluster diameter increased as the linear recording density rose. After annealing, the average diameter increased, but did not change with the recording density. The accumulated area fraction as a function of the magnetic cluster size before and after annealing revealed a change in the distribution of the relatively large (〉100 nm) clusters, and the change in the proportion of large clusters seems to be the main cause of the annealing after effect on the written bits. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A homogeneous, amorphous peroxopolytungstic acid film can be formed easily with the spin-coating method. The film is found to provide a homogeneous tungsten metal film after reduction with hydrogen at ∼400 °C. Although the electric resistivity (∼450 μΩ cm) is higher than that for the bulk (5.65 μΩ cm), this method has an advantage in addition to spin coatability: tungsten metal films with fine patterns can be easily obtained because the starting material is photosensitive.

Notes: Abstract— Eight hundred forty-nine Japanese dentists were asked to record the reason for every tooth extraction of permanent teeth during 1 week in each of four seasons. The reasons were assigned to six groups: dental caries, periodontal disease, eruption problems, trauma, orthodontics and other reasons. Thirty-eight to 40% of the dentists returned the forms in each season, relating to a total of 11 175 extracted teeth. Overall, caries was the most frequent reason for tooth extraction (55.4%), followed by periodontal disease (38.0%). The females lost more teeth due to caries than did the males. In the ≥ 16 age groups, caries was the main reason for tooth extraction. However, periodontal disease became principal only in the males aged 46–65 yr. Anterior teeth, especially in the mandible, represented the highest percentage of periodontal extractions. A considerable difference in the major reason for maxillary tooth loss was observed between both sexes. Maxillary premolars and molars in the males were extracted for periodontal disease as much as for caries, whereas canes was the predominant reason for loss of all maxillary teeth in the females.

Notes: Discusses the need for knowledge management and its required composite. Presents three areas of knowledge management that are regarded as of essential understanding. Considers a knowledge management model that includes an emphasis on information in contrast to the traditional one. Studies the relationship between knowledge management, autopoiesis and apoptosis. Sees both autopoiesis and apoptosis as two of the most important agents in heightening the plateau of knowledge management and its systems.

Notes: Objectives: Removal of dental plaque is an essential element of periodontal treatment. However, there have also been studies of the effects of the mechanical stimulation provided by toothbrushing on gingival host-defense mechanisms. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of toothbrushing on gingival fibroblast proliferation in dogs over time, compared to effects of plaque removal without brushing. Methods: The mouths of six mongrel dogs were divided into four quadrants: two for daily toothbrushing, and two for daily plaque removal with a curette. After 1, 3 and 5 weeks of treatment, histometrical analyses were performed to assess inflammatory cell infiltration, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA)-positive fibroblasts, procollagen type I-positive fibroblasts in the subepithelial connective tissue of junctional epithelium. Results: Toothbrushing increased the number of PCNA-positive fibroblasts in the first week, increased the number of type I procollagen-positive fibroblasts at the fifth week, and reduced inflammatory cell infiltration at the third week. Conclusion: These findings suggest that mechanically stimulated fibroblasts begin proliferating within a week, and this cell division results in an increased number of fibroblasts at the third week. It takes 5 weeks before differences in collagen synthesis between brushing and plaque removal areas are detectable.

Notes: Objective: Probing attachment level provides useful information on patterns of destruction of the periodontium. It is difficult to detect complex attachment loss in clinics. The purpose of this study was to estimate prevalence of vertical and horizontal attachment loss in extracted teeth.Material and Methods: We collected 10,212 extracted teeth from 130 dentists in Japan. After staining of periodontal membrane with erythrosine, linear loss of vertical and horizontal attachment was measured using a digital caliper. Results: Mean vertical attachment loss varied from 5.3 to 8.6 mm. Incisors had severe attachment loss at mesial sites. Specific local attachment loss at palatal sites was observed in maxillary premolars and molars as well as in mandibular canines and premolars. Horizontal attachment loss was observed in 23% of the teeth. Frequency of horizontal attachment loss of 〈inlineGraphic alt="geqslant R: gt-or-equal, slanted" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:03036979:JCPE556:ges" location="ges.gif"/〉2.1 mm was 6.4%.Conclusion: Severe attachment loss was observed on the palatal side of maxillary premolars. More than 1/3 of the maxillary first molars showed horizontal attachment loss. It may be impossible to debride 6.4% of teeth in cases of severe periodontitis because horizontal attachment loss may be deeper than the curette blade length.

Notes: Abstract We report a case of lipoblastoma in a 6-month-old girl with a new chromosomal aberration, 46, XX, der (2) add (2) (p23) del (2) (q33), add (8) (q1?). In addition to the patient's age and pathological features, aberration of long arm of chromosome 8 in lipoblastoma can assist the differential diagnosis from myxoid or well differentiated liposarcoma.

Notes: Abstract Immunosuppressive therapy after transplantation increases the risk of developing neoplasms, and neoplasms of the digestive organs are very common in Asia. We experienced a patient with an intracystic hemorrhage of pancreatic serous cystadenoma during the follow-up after renal transplantation. Pancreatic cystadenomas are not frequent. Only two cases, presenting with acute abdomen, have so far been reported in the literature. The intracystic hemorrhage in our case may have been related to a rapid tumor growth due to weakened antitumor immunity and azathioprine-induced pancreatitis.
