    Notes: The linearity between weight and volume increases, which takes place when kernels of corn and sorghum are immersed in water, was established experimentally. The rate of volume increase was correlated according to an equation analogous to the diffusion equation. The coefficients of volume increase obeyed the Arrehenius equation. The results would be of practical value in designing steeping vessels, as well as of theoretical interest in elucidating the mechanism of water diffusion in cereal grains.

    Notes: A modified dynamic method is introduced to determine the oxygen transfer coefficient, KL a, in aerobic fermentation systems which are not mechanically agitated. The dissolved oxygen concentration is measured continuously following a step down or a step up in aeration rate. The response curve is analyzed to obtain the value of KLaExperiments were carried out at several different air flow rates using mixed culture in concurrent tower fermentors with motionless mixers. The effect of sieve trays and Koch motionless mixers on oxygen transfer was investigated using a 3 in. diameter column. The values of KL aobtained at the bottom of each column were found to be higher than those obtained at the top. Comparison of the results showed that the values ofKL a were higher when the Koch mixers were used than when the sieve trays were employed.The oxygen uptake rate by the organisms rX, is also calculated by using the KL a values obtained. They compare favorably withthe experimentally measured values.

    Notes: It is a well-known fact that choosing a sequence of optimal control variables in each reactor tank of a multistage reactor system can result in a considerable increase of the desired product for a consecutive reaction system. The discrete maximum principle is applied to a generalized optimization problem of first order consecutive biochemical reaction system. A detailed numerical solution as an example is also presented for illustration.

    Notes: A new fluid-solid contacting technique known as Semifluidization has been studied. Mass transfer data were obtained for a benzoic acid-water system, and correlations in terms of mass transfer factors and over-all void fractions (for both packed and fluidized sections) are presented. Previous mass transfer correlations for fixed and fluidized beds are critically evaluated with respect to the limitation and applicability and are discussed in relation to semifluidized-bed mass transfer correlations.

    Notes: Mechanical and dynamical characteristics of semifluidized beds of single-size particles in solid-liquid system were investigated. A semifluidized bed is a type of fluidized bed in which the bed expansion is partially restricted. The emphasis was placed on the study of packed bed formation and pressure drop increase when the semifluidized beds were formed by the compression of fluidized beds. The data showed good agreement with the theoretical and semiempirical equations based on a simple model of fluidized beds.The results of this investigation would also contribute to the understanding of fluidized beds.

    Notes: Γ-ray attenuation method was applied to determine the axial fluidizing bulk density profile for an air-solid aggregative fluidized bed. Except for beds fluidized at very high air velocities two distinct density zones were noted. The density of the bed in the lower portion of the column was relatively constant for a particular set of operating conditions and did not vary with bed height. The density in the top portion of the bed fell rapidly with bed height.The average density of the lower zone was correlated as a function of the operating variables. The density in the top zone was represented by a one-tail normal distribution curve. A somewhat better correlation was obtained by a two-parameter equation at high air velocities. The effects of operational variables, such as air velocity, static bed height, particle size, and particle-size distribution on these correlations were investigated.Friction-factor correlations based on two different definitions of bed height were also obtained.

    Notes: The dynamic response of height in liquid-solid fluidized beds to a change in fluidizing valocity was considered. A linearized model was developed such that the time constant for the system could be estimated with the parameters characterizing the system.Spherical particles, with sizes ranging from 6 to 7 to 70 to 80 mesh and densities ranging from 1.08 g./cc. to 2.5 g./cc., were fluidized by water in a 2-in. diameter glass column. The experimental response to step and rectangular pulse inputs in fluidizing velocity were measured and frequency response data were also obtained.Agreement between the experimental data and the model was quite reasonable in view of the known nonlinearity of fluidization systems. These results show that for control purposes the system behaves as a first order time constant process.

    Notes: In a high-pressure process, feed streams are continually pressurized and product streams are continually depressurized. A flow work exchanger offers an efficient and economical scheme for simultaneously pressurizing a fluid stream and depressurizing a substantially equivalent volume of another fluid stream. Its applicability is however limited to fluids under condensed state. A flow work exchanger uses a displacement vessel to form a closed loop with a processing system. The displacement vessel is alternately filled by a low-pressure feed and a high-pressure product, both pressurized and depressurized, respectively, by substantially nonflow processes. The pressurized feed is pushed into the processing system by the high-pressure product stream and the depressurized product stream is pushed out of the displacement vessel by the low-pressure feed stream. The application of a flow work exchanger is illustrated by means of several high-pressure processes and the direct and indirect advantages obtainable are described.
