Notes: From the phase diagrams of NbCl5-POCl3 and TaCl5-POCl3 follows that the pentachlorides of Nb and Ta form only one addition compound with POCl3 with a molar ratio of 1 : 1. In the vapor phase complete dissociation into the components takes place. With phosphorus pentachloride the addition products NbCl5 PCl5 and TaCl5 PCl5 are formed, giving solid solutions with an excess of PCl5. The structure of these compounds is discussed.

Notes: The polarographic behaviour of NbV and TaV in aqueous solvent systems does not allow a simultaneous determination of the two metals in presence of each other, therefore some organic solvents have been investigated. Characteristic waves have been obtained for NbV in acetonitrile and for NbIV in dimethylformamide. Melts of the system NaCl-KCl-AlCl3 proved to be much more favourable however. NbCl5 and TaCl5 as solutes are present in such melts as monomolecular species and their products of hydrolysis, if any, are converted into the pentachlorides by AlCl3, one of the components of the solvent. In this kind of melt NbV yields a polarographic double wave (NbV → NbIV → NbIII) and TaV a single wave (TaV → TaIII). The half wave potentials of the reductions of the two metals differ by 500 millivolts.

Notes: The complex formation with CH3O- of AsIII, SbIII, GeIV, NbIV, SeIV, TeIV, TiIV, SnIV and MoV has been investigated in absolute methanolic solutions containing (CH3)4NCl, LiCl, or Lithiumtosylate (μ = 1; 20.0°) by means of pH-titrations. The relations between the stoichiometry of the reactions and the shape of the buffer regions, as well as the concentration-dependance of these buffer regions are discussed.

Notes: The polarograms of the metal complexes of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid and of 1,2-Diaminocyclohexane-tetraacetic Acid are described. In a mixture, containing the metal complex MYv-4 as well as the uncomplexed cation M+v, it is usually possible to determine the concentration of the latter with high accuracy with the aid of a polarograph. Such measurements have been used for the determination of the ratios of the formation constants of the complexes of two metals M and M′, and from these ratios the individual formation constants of 49 complexes have been obtained. The best values of the formation constants (20°, μ = 0,1) of metal complexes are tabulated.

Notes: The stability constants of the complexes of nitrilotriacetic acid with La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Yb and Y have been defermined and the polarographic method applied was proved to give good results by a redetermination of the stabilities of the complexes of Cd, Pb, Zn, Co and Ni. There again is a break at Gadolinium in the curve obtained by plotting stability constants versus atomic number of the rare earths.

Notes: pH-titrations in methanolic solutions (μ = 1, N(CH3)4Cl, 20,0°) demonstrate that only 1:1 complexes are formed between NbV or TaV and acetylacetone (aa) The complexes Maa(OR)22+, Maa(OR)3+ and Maa(OR)4 (M = Nb, Ta; R = CH3) are shown to exist. Stepwise complex formation takes place with pyrocatechol (bz), and the existence of the complexes Mbz(OR)3, Mbz(OR)4-, M2bz2(OR)7-, Mbz2(OR)2- and Mbz3OR2- is established. The equilibrium constants of some of the complex forming reactions are evaluated. The new compounds Maa(OR)4, Maa(OR)3Cl, Tabz(OR)3, KTabz(OR)4, KTabz2(OR)2, K2Tabz3OR and M(OR)4Cl have been prepared.
