Notes: Results are presented on the chemical interactions occurring when some monofunctional model compounds simulating the structure and reactivity of thermosetting phenol- and urea-formaldehyde resins are mixed with wood components (hemicelluloses, cellulose, and lignins). Whereas hemicelluloses clearly show a propensity to give condensation products with these model compounds, lignins can react less readily in some instances depending on the delignification procedure used to isolate them and on the type of model compound. Cellulose did not react under the conditions chosen, mostly because of its crystalline character.

Notes: Grafting of poly(acrylic acid) onto commercial polypropylene films following irradiation by γ-rays was carried out in order to improve their surface properties. The amount of grafting with the irradiation dose was found not to follow the expected linear dependence as it is normally observed for polypropylene films prepared in laboratory amounts. We therefore analyzed the influence of the industrial manufacture process in terms of orientation of the film and addition of antioxidants by determining the peroxide surface density and the extent of grafting therefrom. The unoriented polypropylene film presented the highest peroxide concentration and was thus the most adapated material for successful grafting. Whereas phenol antioxidants limit the peroxide formation and thus must be removed from the film for grafting, the thickness of the chemical modification and can be controlled by means of phosphites. Atomicforce microscopy and wettability measurements showed that the grafted poly(acrylic acid) was heterogeneously distributed on the surface of the film, explaining the observed low reproducibility of the grafting reaction. However, we observed that the polarity of the surface was increased by the grafting. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: This paper describes the preparation of new alkynes bearing furanic substituents and their polymerization by catalytic systems based on transition metal halides in order to obtain novel materials with original properties because of the presence of both furan moieties and alternate single and double bonds. However, difficulties arising from the specific reactivity of the heterocycle in our experimental conditions led us to envisage an indirect way to obtain well-defined products, using an aromatic polymer as the precursor.

Notes: Oxygen-organoslov lignin (namely oxygen-acetone) was introduced as a macromonomer into polyesterification systems including diacid chlorides and, optionally, oligoethyleneoxide glycols. It was concluded that the incomplete participation of phenolic hydroxy groups of lignin in these polycondensation reactions could lead to poor crosslinking as shown by the partial solubility of the final polyesters in polar solvents. This paper presents the synthesis, characterization and some properties of these materials.

Notes: The kinetic studies of 2-ethenyl furan polymerization in methylene dichloride catalyzed by trifluoroacetic acid, showed a pseudo second order behaviour with deviations to the first or third order in dependence on the concentration range of the initiator. The rate constant is directly proportional to the square of the initial concentration of initiator and inversely proportional to the initial concentration of monomer. During the polymerization the acid concentration decreases as a consequence of the formation of stable polymeric ions. Moreover, the alkylation of furan ring from the beginning of the polymerization is observed. A pseudo-copolymerization mechanism is proposed to justify the experimental results.
