Notes: Dynamic mechanical measurements in tension and torsion on oriented tapes and monofilaments of a range of liquid crystalline polyesters have been combined with dielectric measurements to obtain a molecular understanding of the relaxation processes. This paper extends our previous work [1,2,3] on polyesters of hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA) and hydroxynaphthoic acid (HNA) to related polymers containing dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN) and terephthalic acid (TPA) or biphenyl (BP) and TPA in place of the HNA. It confirms the association of the β and γ processes with naphthyl and phenyl moieties but shows that the processes cannot be due simply to the independent motions of single units.

Notes: A theoretical study has been made of longitudinal dispersion mechanisms during steady flow of a fluid through unconsolidated spherical beads. The mathematical model utilizes a step function input of thermal energy and presents the solution for the transient behvior of the system. The longitudinal dispersion of the step input is considered the result of eddy mixing of the fluid, molecular conduction within the fluid, and a finite time lag for heat transfer to occur between fluid and particle. The latter mechanism is characterized by both a fluid film resistance and an intraparticle resistance. The exact solution, involving an infinite integral, is approximated to an error function form. The character of the contribution of each mechanism is apparent from the form of the approximate solution, and furthermore, the contributions are shown to be additive to yield the total dispersion. The conditions for convergence to the aproximate solution are indicated. The equations are presented such that the analysis is applicable to both heat and mass transfer processes.

Notes: Copolymers of styrene-methyl methacrylate were irradiated in vacuo with γ-rays; viscosity changes and gas yields (moles gas per mole methyl methacrylate in copolymer) for H2, CO, CO2, CH4, HCOOCH3, and CH3OH were examined at doses of 1.0 Mrep to 10.0 Mrep. It was found that styrene molecules protect the copolymer from degrading while decreasing the gas yields up to a styrene concentration of about 0.5 mole fraction; above this concentration, these radiation effects are independent of composition. When styrene-methyl acrylate copolymers were irradiated, styrene offered protection aganist gelation but simultaneously increased the gas yields (gases liberated were identical with those from the first system).

Notes: The axial thermal expansion coefficients of a series of highly oriented thermotropic liquid crystal copolyesters with random phenylene-naphthalene main-chain sequences are reported. In common with many other highly oriented polymers the values are negative. Generally, there are two transitions in the slope of the expansion-temperature curves. The positions of these transitions are correlated with high activation energy relaxations in the mechanical spectra. Comparison of the thermal expansion properties determined by x-ray and macroscopic techniques on two of the samples reveals little difference between the bulk material and a unit with a segmental length of ten monomers.

Notes: Recent increased use of ultrafine mechanically ground alumina trehydrate (ATH) as a flame retardant and smoke suppressant has occurred. This growth has, to some extent, displaced the traditional fine precipitated forms of ATH in a variety of polymer applications. In general, the morphology of the more expensive precipitated ATH is different from ground ATH. In this study there appears to be little effect of ATH particle morphology on the PVC performance properties tested.
