Description / Table of Contents: The dissolution of Mg in its molten halides and the reaction of MgH2 and Mg3N2, respectively, with MgX2 (X = Cl, Br, J) have been investigated. The formation of Mg22+-ions is assumed as the most probable process of dissolution in an atmosphere of inert gas.Hydrid halides MgHX and nitride halides Mg2NX, respectively, are formed by sintering together the anhydrous halides with MgH2 or Mg3N2.

Notes: Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy has been applied to the investigation of synovial fluids (SFs) aspirated from arthritic joints. Significant differences, related to differences in the composition of the fluid as a result of the disease processes, were found between spectra of SFs from joints affected by rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, spondyloarthropathies, and meniscal injuries. Linear discriminant analysis with leave-one-out cross validation was used to classify 239 SF film spectra obtained from 86 patients. Using a patient-based approach, in which the consensus of results obtained from three spectra of each fluid was taken as the diagnosis, multivariate analysis successfully classified spectra into four classes, in excellent agreement with clinical diagnosis (96.5% correct classification). These results demonstrate that when combined with a properly trained classifier, infrared spectra of SF films can be used as an aid in the diagnosis of arthritic disorders. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: The electrophoresis of poly-γ-benzyl-L-glutamate (PBLG), poly-L-alanine (PLA) and nylon dissolved in various solvents was studied in a glass cell containing three sintered glass partitions. After the passage of a measured amount of charge the concentration of PBLG remained constant in all four chambers when the helicogenic solvents dimethylformamide and ethylene dichloride were used, but in mixtures of ethylene dichloride and dichloroacetic acid and in trifluoroacetic acid, polypeptide migrated to the cathode. Electrophoresis also occurred with PLA in trifluoroacetic acid and with nylon in formic acid. Although the total charge on the polyion could not be determined, the results show beyond reasonable doubt that polypeptides and polyamides are protonated in the presence of moderately strong organic acids.

Notes: The kinetics and mechanism of H2O and CO2 evolution during uncatalyzed and copper(oxide)-catalyzed (Cu, CuO, CuO0.67) oxidation of isotactic polypropylene have been investigated in detail for various catalysts over a range of temperatures (90-150°C). These volatiles were determined chromatographically; H2O and CO2 represent the main volatiles of the oxidation, comprising about 80 mol % of all volatiles. Uncatalyzed oxidation evolves ca. 1 mol of H2O and 1 mol of CO2 for each unit mole of polymer oxidized, while catalyzed oxidation produces 2 mol of H2O and ca. 1.2 mol of CO2 for each unit mole of polymer. These results indicate that secondary as well as tertiary H atoms on the polymer chains are involved in hydroperoxide formation and decay. The oxidation mechanism has been formulated and evaluated on this basis. It consists essentially of two parallel oxidation reactions involving tertiary and secondary groups (H atoms and hydroperoxides), respectively. The mechanism can be represented by first- and pseudo-first-order reactions in series: (1) oxygen absorption showing induction periods; (2) hydroperoxide formation and decay (plateaus are reached); (3) H2O evolution from the decay of hydroperoxides; and (4) subsequent CO2 production involving chain scission. Arrhenius parameters for all oxidation reactions (uncatalyzed and catalyzed) are also presented. It appears that CuO0.67 is the most efficient catalyst of those investigated.
