    Notes: High voltage electric discharges between two electrodes immersed in a liquid (“electrohydraulic discharges”) inactivate microorganisms suspended in the liquid. The intense pulse of UV radiation emitted from the plasma formed between the electrodes causes most of the bactericidal effects, rather than shock waves, or free radicals or other chemical species formed in the liquid medium. A method of sterilizing materials without contamination from electrode debris is described. Possible applications and limitations of the technique are outlined.

    Notes: By using gas chromatographic intermediate surface testing to study the surface properties of fused silica capillary tubing, the reversible adsorption of aldehydes and ketones on the fused silica surface has been observed for the first time. It is shown that this interaction can arise from the preferential interaction of carbonyl functional groups at bonded silanol sites on the surface. It is further shown that simple test mixtures containing aldehydes or ketones can be used to probe the concentration of water and bonded silanols on the surface and thus to evaluate capillary manufacturing processes and thermal and chemical surface treatments.

    Notes: A method has been developed for fabricating fused silica capillary columns which have specific surface properties but still retain the excellent strength, flexibility, and resilience of pure fused silica. By using the Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition process (MCVD), typically used for the production of optical fiber lightguides, inorganic dopants such as Al, Nd, Ge, and P can be introduced into the preform-tube by MCVD. Doped columns have a wide range of specific surface properties, and columns with undoped fused silica prepared by MCVD are more chemically inert and less acidic than columns prepared by conventional methods. This paper describes the method for fabricating capillaries and the initial studies to characterize them.

    Notes: We report the development of a capillary gas chromatographic method, superior to existing packed column methods, for the analysis of highly brominated additive fire-retardants, including decabromodiphenyl ether (1) and decabromodiphenoxyethane (II). Neither compound has been analyzed previously by capillary GC, and there are no published methods for (II). For (I), the new method is 5-10 times faster than an analogous packed column method, and it has 100 times lower detection limits and twice the precision of a gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric method. For (II), the capillary method is 30-50% faster than an unpublished liquid chromatographic method. The greater efficiency of the capillary method makes possible the complete resolution (R ≥ 1.25) of structurally very similar compounds (e.g. compound (II) and its Br9Cl1 and Br8Cl2 analogues). With the new method, commercial preparations of (I) and (II) can be rapidly analyzed, and samples from combustion and pyrolysis experiments can be evaluated for compositional changes.

    Notes: A novel method for measuring the permeation of water vapor through polymer films is described. A cellulose detector film incorporating cobalt chloride in a blue anhydrous from is sealed between two pieces of test film in a specially designed cell. The cell is placed in a controlled temperature and humidity cabinet, and the disappearance of the blue color of the cobalt chloride is recorded spectrophotometrically as water vapor diffuses through the test film into the detector film. This simple method of determining water-vapor-transmission rates is more rapid than standard gravimetric procedures because of the highly sensitive detection technique.

    Notes: A Cameca 3F imaging ion microanalyser has been used for the quantitative analysis of epitaxial layers of cadmium mercury telluride (CMT) and related materials on a variety of substrates. CMT has low thermal stability, readily losing Hg, and the erosion rate is unusually high. Nevertheless, satisfactory, reproducible, depth profiles are obtainable under constant erosion conditions. The positive secondary ion spectra of CMT, CdTe and HgTe are complicated by extensive interference by molecular ions and multicharged ions of the numerous isotopes of the matrix elements. The energy distributions of many of these are anomalous and the intensity varies non-linearly with primary-ion current density. It is shown that this anomalous behaviour is characteristic of the elements rather than the matrix. Wittmaack's theory of post-sputtering ionization is confirmed by demonstrating that the intensity in these cases is proportional to the square of the primary-ion current density and the effect is quantified for a variety of multicharged ions. Advantage has been taken of the low energy cut-off of these species to overcome mass spectral interferences. Examples are given of the quantitative variation of trace elements through epitaxial layers as part of an on-going analytical programme.
