    Notes: Specific retention volumes Vg for acetone, 1-propanol, ethyl acetate, hexane, and tetrahydrofuran were obtained by inverse gas chromatography using poly(ethylene oxide) as stationary phase. Measurements were done at different flow rates, different injected sample amounts, and with three columns of different packing. Retention volumes were measured above and below the melting temperature of the polymer. The shape of the flow diagram and the variation of retention time tr with the sample amount depend on the temperature, flow rate, and the nature of the probe. Moreover, and due to the polymer polarity, the retention volume is a linear function of the column coating. All these factors must be controlled in order to obtain an accurate value of Vg which allows the determination of the crystallinity of the stationary phase. Above Tm, Vg is independent of flow, packing, and amount of the injected sample.

    Notes: The idea of separating the free energy of mixing into two contributions (corresponding to the “physical” or “nonspecific” and to the “specific” interactions, respectively) proposed by Painter and Coleman has been extended to ternary polymer/polymer/polymer blends. In this paper experimental phase diagrams of three ternary blends have been reproduced by estimating both contributions for the interaction energy density (Bij) which characterizes each polymer pair. In contrast to the Painter-Coleman Miscibility Guide rules, we have found that, in some cases, “specific” contributions positive and unfavorable to the mixing, due to the self-association of one of the components, can describe more adequately the experimental trends.

    Notes: Inverse gas chromatography (IGC) has been used to investigate thermodynamic miscibility of a molten poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blend. Toluene, benzene, and chloroform have been employed as probes in pure and mixed stationary phases of these polymers. Experimental measurements have been taken over a narrow range of temperatures because of the high PMMA glass transition temperature as well as the degradation of the PEO. The interaction parameter χ23 determined at 150°C is slightly negative and dependent on the interacting probe, as has been also noted in previous chromatographic studies on polymer-polymer miscibility. The last section is devoted to a model calculation, using Flory's equation of state theory. Different χ23-concentration curves have been simulated, with the interaction energy parameter X23 as an adjustable parameter.

    Notes: A commercial sample of a copolymer of bisphenol-A and epichlorohydrin (Phenoxy) has been carefully fractionated in a dioxane/methanol mixture. Mark-Houwink constants in THF and the molecular weight distribution of the raw material have been obtained on the basis of the universal calibration procedure. Conformational magnitudes such as the characteristic ratio C∞ or the steric factor σ have been determined from viscometric data at 63°C in a good (dioxane) and a θ-solvent (1,2-dichloroethane). Inverse gas chromatography was used to study phenoxy miscibility with a variety of polymers. Using different probes as model compounds, the partial molar enthalpy of mixing ΔH ∞1 at infinite dilution has been determined. Results were correlated with the reported miscibility of phenoxy with polyesters, polyethers, and polyoxides. A linear multiparametric correlation of ΔH∞1 with polarizabilities, dipole moments, and hydrogen bond accepting powers provides for a comprehensive analysis of other miscible systems.

    Notes: The influence of the chemical modification of the hydroxyl groups of phenoxy resin (PH) by benzoate, acetate and methoxy groups on its miscibility with poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (P2VPy) is investigated. Both DSC and FTIR results permit the definition of three distinctive regions: up to 40% modification all 50/50 blends are miscible; between 40 and 55% modification all blends present partial miscibility and at higher than 55% modification the blends are totally immiscible. Specific interactions between the hydroxyl groups of PH and the amine groups of P2VPy are put forward as an explanation for these observations.

    Notes: The influence of the interchange reactions of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/polyarylate (PAr) blends on the melting behavior of isothermally crystallized PET has been studied. PET shows three melting endotherms in the pure state and also when mixed with PAr. These endotherms are explained in terms of primary and secondary crystallization processes as well as recrystallization during the calorimetric scan. It is also shown that interchange reactions hinder the crystallization processes of PET.

    Notes: The effect of the interchange reactions in PBT/PAr blends on thermal and mechanical properties has been studied as well as the influence of the concentration of tetrabutyltitanate on these properties. These studies have been carried out by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and tensile tests. The results based on DSC studies allow us to conclude that the capacity of the transesterified blends to crystallize decreases when compared with the physical blends, due to the formation of copolymers. Furthermore, an enhanced effect is observed when the amount of the catalyst is increased. In addition, a slight decrease in the low deformation mechanical properties and a significant increase in the deformation at break is observed as a consequence of the interchange reactions. The presence of tetrabutyltitanate, which accelerates the interchange reactions, has a 2-fold effect on these properties. On the one hand, it enhances the aforementioned process, but on the other hand, the associated effect of the degradation reactions decreases the mechanical properties, particularly those of the deformation at break. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: A commercial polyarylate (PAr), a copolyester of Bisphenol-A with 50 percent terephthalate-50 percent isophthalate, has been characterized by means of a combination of gel permeation chromatography and viscometry. It has been studied as first component of a series of polymer blends. The presence of either one glass transition temperature (Tg) or two has been used as a criterion to determine the miscibility of each blend. In some cases, the possible incidence of transesterification reactions has been considered.

    Notes: The intended objective of this work was to bring together two immiscible polymers, polyarylate (PAr) and Phenoxy [poly(hydroxy ether of bisphenol-A)], preparing ternary mixtures with a third component, poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT). Experimental results showed that ternary mixtures containing 30% or more PBT gave single glass transition temperatures by DSC. Moreover, the PBT melting point depended on the composition of the mixtures. These results, which could be indicative of the existence of a single amorphous phase in these blends, have been discussed. Nevertheless, results must be considered with caution, given the peculiarities of the Tg-composition diagrams for the miscible pairs PAr/PBT and Phenoxy/PBT. Hypothetic interchange reactions during melting have been found to be unimportant.
