Notes: Treatment of various celluloses such as cotton, sulphite, and sulphate pulp with bromine water brings about profound changes in the fine structure of the fiber. Depending on the conditions of the treatment and on the nature of the cellulose, increases or decreases in the accessibility of the cellulose are observed, indicating crystallization and decrystallization processes. In the case of bleached sulphate pulp, similarly to rayon previously studied, an initial decrystallization proceeds the crystallization step. These changes were determined by the IR method, which was correlated previously to the bromine accessibility method. They are accompanied by highly significant changes in moisture absorption. The crystallization proceeds according to first-order kinetics with respect to the concentration of the less-ordered regions (LOR) of the cellulose. The rates of crystallization for the various celluloses varied in a range of 4 orders of magnitude. The activation energies of the bromide induced crystallization were found for all celluloses to be in the range of 10-15 kcal/mol, as compared to 30-40 kcal/mol obtained upon crystallizing the same celluloses by heating in the temperature range of 180-200°C. These values correspond to those of solvent and thermal crystallizations of poly(ethylene terephthalate), indicating the similarity between the crystallization mechanisms of the two polymers.

Notes: A strategy for the automatic synthesis of plant operating procedures, through the integration of artificial intelligence and mathematical modeling tools is discussed. This “predicative/numerical” modeling paradigm integrates qualitative and quantitative aspects of the problem in a same framework. It uses a “process-centered” qualitative modeling approach together with MILP optimization techniques to automatically generate operating strategies. The operation procedures network (OP-Net), formulated in terms of processes from a generic library, describes abstract (hardware-independent) processing paths leading to the desired operational goals. In this approach, the model assumptions, conservation expressions and data are described at the same level of abstraction, using the same formal representation. This permits the direct, automatic generation and modification of operation procedures in situations involving changes in basic assumptions and initial scenarios. Thus, flexibility, an essential feature of batch processing, is safeguarded.

Notes: ---In reversed phase liquid chromatography, the retention indices of some neutral and acidic explosives and related compounds (nitramines, nitroaromatics, aminoaromatics, and nitrophenols) based on the alkan-2-one, alkyl aryl ketone, and 1-nitroalkane retention index standards have been determined by the application of a new mathematical adaptation method, viz. a multiparametric least-squares regression iterative method. This method was applied to two types of columns. The first group includes six octadecyl-C18 columns with different packing materials and obtained from different manufacturers, while the second group comprises one octyl-C8 column. The retention indices have been extensively studied using either methanol-water or methanol-phosphate buffer mobile phase systems. The calculated multiparametric retention indices values were compared with those obtained by Guardino's, Grobler's, and Kovàts' methods. The influences of the concentration of the organic modifier in the mobile phase, aqueous mobile phase pH, and the column packing material on the retention indices of the explosives were also investigated. Good agreement was observed between the retention indices calculated by the use of the four mathematical methods for both neutral and acidic explosives.

Notes: Analysis is made of the asymmetry of the carbonyl stretching vibration of poly(ethylene terephthalate) and poly(propylene terephthalate) as a function of annealing frrom amorphous to crystalline polymer. An apparently anomalous behavior of carbonyl band half-width as a function of density for PPT is shown to be due to this asymmetry. The results are interpreted in terms of the conformational redistribution which occurs upon annealing.
