Notes: A two-parameter, corresponding-states form for direct correlation function integrals in liquids is applied to many types of systems with one substance being supercritical. This gives a quantitative correlation for volumetric behavior, pure and mixed solvent Henry's constants, and Henry's Law deviations over wide ranges of conditions using only pure-component information and a single binary parameter. Details of the method and results are given for H2, N2, CO, CH4, and other gases in pure and mixed simple, polar, and aqueous solvents and coal oils. Because of its reliable predictive capability, the present approach can serve as a generator of data for parameter estimation by other models such as equations of state.

Notes: A statistical mechanical solution theory is used as the basis for corresponding states formulations. Universal functions relate the compressibility to the reduced density and the partial molar volume to reduced solvent density only. Correlations are in good agreement with data for all types of nonelectrolytes over wide ranges of temperatures including saturated and compressed systems. The correlations provide simple methods for describing the isothermal pressure dependence of liquid volumes and the pressure dependence of the ideal-solution solubility of gases in liquids.

Notes: A unified statistical mechanical treatment is developed for adsorption and surface diffusion on homogeneous surfaces. Using molecular parameters, the model accounts for all physical effects of adsorbent-adsorbate, adsorbate-adsorbate, and adsorbate-gas interactions at submonolayer coverages.

Notes: Application of the model of Part I is made to several systems with various graphitized carbon blacks over wide ranges of temperatures and submonolayer coverage. Agreement with all data for equilibrium and transport is probably within experimental error.

Notes: The areal rate of liquid phase hydrogenation of cyclohexene on supported platinum catalysts does not depend on the nature of the support. Nor does it depend on particle size of the metal. The rate constant is independent of the nature of the solvent when the concentration of hydrogen in it is expressed as its measured or calculated solubility. All observations are compatible with the idea that the measured rate is that of chemisorption of dihydrogen on a metal surface covered with reactive hydrocarbon intermediates.

Notes: The general thermodynamic relation between Henry's constant for a solute in a mixed solvent and Henry's constants for the solute in the pure solvents is discussed in terms of limiting activity coefficients. The inadequacy of several common excess free energy expressions is shown, and results are presented for a form of Kirkwood-Buff solution theory based on pair distribution functions. Several unknown integrals in the theory are approximated by an empirical function of solvent composition and of solvent properties which generally predicts experimental data for gases in both simple and complex binary solvents with good accuracy. Prediction of fugacities of gaseous components in ternary and higher solvents and in nonideal solutions is considered.
