Notizen: A method has been developed for the automated determination of C5—C10 and C2—C6 volatile organic compounds in urban and rural air, using programmed temperature vaporization injection from a sorbent tube trap. A single activated charcoal sorbent tube was repeatedly used to collect samples of air with trapped VOCs being subsequently desorbed onto either a wide bore dimethyl polysiloxane (C5—C10) or porous layer open tubular (C2—C6) gas chromatography column without use of intermediate cryogenic refocussing. The high flow rates of helium used during the analysis resulted in the sample tube being cleaned and ready to reuse following the analytical separation. Examples of analysis of aromatic VOCs in urban air, and biogenic emissions in rural air, collected in a Sitka Spruce forest are presented. Using this method it is possible to quasi-continuously monitor concentrations of VOCs in locations where high sensitivity in situ analysis is required, but where cryogenic coolants may not be readily available or desirable.

Notizen: The composition and concentration of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAC) in fuels. Theier combustion products and in the atmosphere remains a topic of considerable interest. Despite the wealth of literature on the identification of PAC, speciation at low concentrations remains difficult due to instrument limitation and the complexity of fuel and environmental samples. Consequently on line sample preparation procedures (SPE, SFE, LC, etc.) are becomeing an increasingly important step in the analysis procedure particularly where sample clean-up and fractionation are essential for improving analytical resolution. In this study a normal phase high pressure analytical resolution. In this study a normal phase high pressure liquid chromatography-gas chromatography (LC-GC) system has been developed to provide quantitative analysis of samples, as diverse as coal liquids, petroleum fuels, diesel exhaust particulates, and urban air particulates. Separation and identification of parent and alkylated PAH, hetercycline nitro-and oxy-PAC can be achieved by direct coupling to an atomic emission detector and a bech top mass spectrometer. For both systems the primary LC separation combined with the large sample volume transferred to GC vastly improves detection limits. Furthermore the complimentary nature of the two detectors used enables the positive indentification of many unknowns.

Notizen: The reaction between H and C3H5 has been studied at 291 K. Exciplex laser flash photolysis at 193.3 nm of hexa-1,5-diene-He mixtures generated both H and C3H5 ([H] ≪ [C3H5]), which were detected in time-resolved mode by resonance fluorescence and absorption spectroscopy, respectively. Rate coefficients are presented at four pressures in the range 98 ≤ P/torr ≤ 400; no clear pressure-dependence is found in this range of pressures and the mean rate coefficient is (2.8 ± 1.0) × 10-10 cm3 molecule-1 s-1. Calculations based on the Troe factorization method confirm that this reaction is near its high-pressure limit under the experimental conditions.

Notizen: Recent developments in unimolecular theory have placed great emphasis on the role played by angular momentum in determining the details of the dependence of the rate coefficient on pressure and temperature. The natural way to investigate these dependencies is through the master equation formulation, where the rate coefficient is recovered as the eigenvalue of the smallest magnitude of the spatial operator. Except for very simple cases, the master equation must be solved with numerical methods. For the 2-dimensional master equation this leads to large sparse matrices and correspondingly lengthy computational times in order to determine the eigenvalue of the least magnitude. A reformulation of the problem in terms of a diffusion equation approximates the final matrix with a narrow banded matrix that can easily be factored using a variation of Gaussian elimination. The 2-dimensional master equation can then be solved with inverse iteration, which rapidly converges to the desired eigenpair. This method can be up to 10 times faster than conventional iterative algorithms for finding the desired eigenpair. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Comput Chem 18:1004-1010, 1997

Notizen: The pressure and temperature dependences of association reactions involving atoms and/or radicals is discussed and illustrated by reference to the reactions CH3 + CH3 → C2H6, CH3 + O2 → CH3O2, CH3 + H → CH4, and H + C2H4 → C2H5. Recent experimental measurements of the rate coefficients, k([M], T) are described, particular attention being paid to experiments designed to measure the rate coefficient over wide ranges of pressure and temperature. Methods of fitting the experimental data, to obtain estimates of the limiting rate coefficients, k0 and k∞, and to permit extrapolation to regions beyond the experimental range, are discussed. These methods include the Troe factorization technique, a combination of master equation and variational RRKM theory, and recent calculations by Wagner and Wardlaw using the technique developed by Wardlaw and Marcus to describe loose transition states.
