Notes: Alternating block copolymers of bisphenol A carbonate and dimethylsiloxane at three different compositions were studied by mechanical and dielectric measurements. Both sets of data exhibit transitions characteristic of the primary glass transitions of the component polymers. This behavior is characteristic of heterophase polymers. Dielectric data for all three samples cast from methylene chloride solution are presented. In addition, one sample was also cast from the solution of methylene chloride-n-hexane. The resulting morphologic differences among the samples are reflected in the activation energies associated with the low-temperature transitions. The time-temperature superposition principle was invoked to construct master curves for both mechanical and dielectric data. It was found that there exist considerable discrepancies in the respective master curves and the shift factor data. These results indicate that this heterophase block copolymer is thermorheologically complex.

Notes: A study has been conducted to determine the effects of flow configuration and reaction conditions on the performance of composite reverse osmosis membranes prepared by plasma polymerization of allylamine over a porous polymer substrate. It was established that superior membranes were obtained by using a gas-flow configuration avoiding direct monomer flow over the substrate. High rejections of NaCl could be attained when the plasma-deposited film was sufficiently thick to bridge all of the pores in the substrate. It was observed that in addition to influencing the rate of polymerization, the conditions used to sustain the plasma also affected the reverse osmosis characteristics of the deposited film. The effects of these conditions and other preparation procedures are discussed. Attempts to use infrared spectroscopy and ESCA to identify the relationship between polymer structure and reverse osmosis performance were not successful. ESCA did prove useful, though, in confirming an earlier postulated hypothesis that degradation of reverse osmosis performance is associated with the hydrolysis of nitrogen-containing structures in the plasma-deposited film.

Notes: Stress relaxation and dynamic mechanical measurements were carried out for two types of heterophase polyblends. One is obtained by blending homopolymers of butadiene and styrene (high impact polystyrene or HIPS); the other by blending homopolymer of butadiene with a triblock copolymer of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS/B). It was found that for HIPS, time temperature superposition is difficult, and the shift factors cannot be adequately interpreted by a reasonable model. For SBS/B it is impossible to carry out superposition. Modulus-temperature and loss tangent curves determined by dynamic mechanical experiments indicate the presence of new transition near -40°C. Possible mechanisms giving rise to this new transition are discussed.

Notes: The molecular theory of Rouse-Bueche-Zimm has been modified to predict the viscoelastic behavior of homogeneous block copolymers. The model consists of beads and springs whose magnitudes correspond to the types of blocks in the polymer. Maximum relaxation times can be computed by this model. Viscoelastic data for poly(styrene-b-α-methyl styrene-b-styrene), poly(α-methyl styrene-b-styrene-b-α-methylstyrene) and poly(styrene-b-α-methyl styrene) were determined by stress relaxation methods. The results compare favorably with those predicted by the theory.

Notes: A simple equation is proposed to calculate the shear-rate-dependent viscosities of entangled polymers and particle suspensions. The rate-dependence of the viscosities is attributed to changes in certain structural parameters associated with the fluids, such as entanglement density or degree of particle agglomeration. The state of these structural parameters for fluids subjected to a given shear flow is determined by two competing process, i.e., structural breakdown and reformation, which in steady How arc in a state of dynamic equilibrium. For the polymer systems structural degradation and reformation are tantamount to entanglement loss and creation, whereas for the suspensions they are correlated with the particle breakup and flocculation. The regeneration process is driven by thermal diffusion and is assumed to be independent of shear rate. The degradation process is caused primarily by the imposed shear and is assumed to be proportional to the shear rate to a power m (0〈m〈1). Based on these assumptions, structural variation for fluids undergoing not only steady-state but a I so transient flows can be calculated. Model predictions and their implications are discussed. The derived equation can be applied to many non-Newtonian pseudo-plastic fluids.

Notes: A series of styrene-acenaphthylene copolymers was prepared by thermal polymerization. Homogeneous samples were obtained except for those compositions where the initial concentration of styrene monomer was 40-60 mole-%. Master curves and characteristic viscoelastic parameters were obtained for the homogeneous copolymers. The plot of Tg vs. copolymer composition yielded a linear relationship.

Notes: The plasma polymerization of C2F4 was carried out in both continuous wave and pulsed rf discharges to establish the effects of reaction conditions on the kinetics of polymer deposition and the polymer structure. ESCA spectra of the polymer show evidence for —CF3, —CF2, and —CH2— groups. Under conditions favoring low deposition rates, the dominant functional group is —CF2—. At higher deposition rates the concentration of —CF2— groups is reduced and a more crosslinked polymer is produced. Both polymer deposition rates and polymer structures were essentially identical when using continuous wave and pulsed rf discharges.

Notes: Reverse osmosis membranes prepared by plasma polymerization of allylamine-nitrogen mixtures over a porous substrate were evaluated for the rejection of components present in washwater. The membranes exhibited high rejections for sodium chloride, potassium chloride, detergent, and dextrose. High rejections of urea could be achieved, but only at a sacrifice of water flux. Lactic acid could also be rejected but caused a degradation of the plasma-deposited layer.
