    Notes: Arrays of foils similar in design to airplane wings have been placed in an algal culture flume to create systematic mixing. Vortices are produced in the culture due to the pressure differential created as water flows over and under the foils. In a flume having a flow rate of 30 cm/s, the foil arrays produced vortices with rotation rates of ca. 0.5-1.0 Hz. This rotation rate is satisfactory to take advantage of the flashing light effect if the culture is sufficiently dense. Solar energy conversion efficiencies in an experimental culture of P. tricornutum increased 2.2-2.4 fold with the foil arrays in place versus controls with no foil arrays and solar energy conversion efficiencies averaged 3.7% over a three-month period. Five-day running means of solar energy conversion efficiencies reached as high as 10% during the three-month period. The use of foil arrays appears to be an effective and inexpensive way to utilize the flashing light effect in a dense algal culture system.

    Notes: A continuum model for multicomponent distillation in the minimum reflux limit, first proposed by Nandakumar and Andres, is refined for the special case of constant relative volatility (CRV) and constant molar overflow (CMO) and is extended to columns with multiple feeds and multiple products. A relaxation algorithm for calculating steady-state conditins in any minimum reflux CRV, CMO column is established. This generalization of Underwood's classic treatment of single-feed columns is used to explore the characteristics of several single-feed and multiple-feed distillation systems. Critical operating points at which the steady-state composition profile in a minimum reflux column is indeterminate are identified and analytical expressions predicting the location of these points are established.

    Notes: This article describes and critically evaluates a complete method for the quantitation of PCB in sediment samples. The extraction and clean-up procedure is described. Packed column and capillary column results are compared. Capillary column quantitation yields lower values for total PCB loading. Preferences for capillary column quantitation are discussed and explained. Capillary quantitation is based on the combination of an external Aroclor standard and an internal decachlorobiphenyl standard for normalizing data. In light of the recent report of synthesis of all 209 PCB congeners a suggestion is made to use these as absolute standards to establish a bank of primary standard Aroclors.

    Notes: A method is described for the determination of 22 tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin isomers at the low part-per-trillion (ppt) level. High resolution, narrow bore, open tubular columns (OTCs) with 100 μm i.d. can achieve better separations than presently used 320 or 250 μm i.d. columns in about half the total time. Relative retention times and response factors for all 22 TCDD isomers are presented for the electron capture detection and for the molecular ion mass of individual isomers under electron impact ionization with selected ion monitoring (SIM).

    Notes: A method is described for the quantitative determination of linear alkylene oxide-fatty alcohol condensates, nonionic surface active agents in water. Surface active agent is extracted from water samples with benzene. Surfactant is further extracted by salting out into chloroform. Capillary, supercritical fluid chromatography allows the separation and quantitative determination of oligometric constituents using carbon dioxide as a supercritical fluid. In this case, a fingerprint of the surfactant is obtained. Analysis time, however, is approximately 60 minutes. In the second case, the ether groups of ethylene oxide fatty alcohol condensates are cleaved by reaction with 50 percent hydrobromic acid in glacial acetic acid in sealed ampoules. The resulting alkyl bromides are extracted with carbon disulfide and chromatographed by both the supercritical fluid, capillary column chromatography (SFC) and high resolution open tubular column gas chromatography (OTC - HRGC). Results are in good agreement between these two techniques.

    Notes: Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) is a promising technique for the extraction of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD) from environmental matrices such as contaminated sediments. The ability of SFE to solubilize many organic contaminants is well documented in industrial processes but its analytical applications were exploited just recently. In this study supercritical carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide and their mixtures with 2% methanol were used to extract 2,3,7,8-TCDD from aquatic sediments. An attractive feature of this process is that the carbon dioxide, being a virtually inert fluid, leaves no solvent residue on the processed sediment. Almost 100% of the 2,3,7,8-TCDD can be extracted from a sediment spiked with 200 μg/kg 2,3,7,8-TCDD in 30 minutes by using supercritical carbon dioxide + 2% methanol. Cleanup procedure is compared with the Soxhlet extraction procedure currently used as a standard method for extracting dioxins from sediment samples.

    Notes: A simple method has been developed for the direct coupling of supercritical fluid extractions (SFE) with a high resolution gas chromatograph (HRGC) equipped with an electron capture detector (ECD). SFE conditions have been investigated for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from sediments in terms of mobile phase, entrainer, pressure, temperature, and mass-flow through the extractor. Dynamic leaching and static steady-state extractions were compared. Extraction efficiencies of up to 100% in less than 15 minutes have been obtained. The extracted PCBs are quantitatively transferred into a fused silica open tubular column (OTC). Determination of PCBs was tested on certified sediment from National Water Research Institute and the results agreed well with certified values.

    Notes: An integrated analytical methodology has been developed for determining nitrogen-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which enables quantitation of individual contaminants as low as 1 μg/kg in sediment samples. A cross-sectional profile from the Hamilton Harbour sediment samples was analyzed for azaarenes. These contaminants were separated by Soxhlet extraction, and pH adjustment allowed their isolation from different classes of neutral and acidic components. Separation and identification of the organic bases in each sample were achieved by using open tubular column gas chromatography with thermionic detection and HRGC-mass spectrometry. Organic bases present in the samples included mostly azaarenes such as acridines, benzacridines, azafluorene, benzoquinolines, azapyrenes, etc. Quantitation and environmental significance of these compounds are discussed. Recoveries of individual azaarenes at two different levels were evaluated. Data presented indicate that detection limits of this method are between 1 and 10 μg/kg. Recovery azaarenes from bottom sediment samples at concentration levels between 1 to 100 μg/kg is 81 ± 17%.

    Notes: An integrated analytical procedure for polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) multiresidues in environmental samples has been developed and applied to well-characterized samples. PCB residues are characterized and quantified using wall coated open tubular column (WCOT) gas chromatography or HRGC/MS-selected ion monitoring. An automated data system based on a Spectra Physics SP-4200 computing integrator is used to select and quantitate peaks of individual congeners and homolog groups. This procedure consistently yields results with a reproducibility within 3 percent for HRGC-ECD and 3.7 percent for HRGC/MS-SIM technique respectively.

    Notes: A method for the determination of anionic solutes such as phenol, cresols, and xylenols present in industrial effluents has been developed. It is based on microextraction using two miscible phases followed by demixing of the phases by the addition of ammonium sulfate. The extraction properties of 2-propanol were examined and the procedures were optimized. High resolution gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the selected ion monitoring mode was used as a separation and quantitation technique. This method is rapid and precise and allows detection limits of 1 μg L-1 to be easily obtainable employing a 50 mL water sample.
