Notes: Summary Inhibition of protein synthesis accelerates chromosome decondensation in late mitosis/early interphase, as shown by chromatin pattern analysis in cells ofAllium cepa L. root meristems. Protein synthesis inhibition also activates nucleologenesis, a function linked to postmitotic reinitiation of transcription. The kinetics of nucleologenesis under different anisomycin treatments show that no transient stimulation of transcription occurs. Instead, inhibition of protein synthesis during telophase merely advances the beginning of nucleologenesis in relation to the chromosome cycle. Hence, proteins synthesized during late mitosis apparently prevent chromosome decondensation and reinitiation of transcription in telophase.
