    Notes: The isothermal decomposition of a phenolic resin in a phenolic-carbon cloth composite was measured in air at 0.1 to 0.2 torr over the temperature range 104-718°C. Two decomposition rate relationships are presented that can be used to predict decomposition. One assumes two second-order consecutive rate-controlling reactions, and the other assumes a diffusion-limited second-order reaction. Two rate constants govern each relationship, one being operative during the initial decomposition stages, and the other during the final stages. Evidence is presented to support the applicability of both relationships to predict decomposition over the entire temperature range studied. Arrhenius plots of the rate constants consist of several segments linearly connected. Activation energies and frequency factors computed from these segments cover a broad range of values. The activation energies are used to correlate the temperature ranges with the predominant products formed in these ranges.

    Notes: 1,3,5-Trioxane (1) and 1,3-dioxep-5-ene (2) were copolymerized with BF3OEt2 at 65°C. The products, after base hydrolysis, were characterized by 13C and 1H NMR and were found to assume the chemical structure 4 of a copolymer containing oxymethylene and oxy-2-butenylene units with 4-hydroxy-2-butenyl and methoxy end groups, with the ratio of hydroxy-2-butenylene to methoxy end groups varying with experimental conditions. The copolymer demonstrates crystallinity and thermal stability comparable to poly(trioxane-co-ethylene oxide)s. Copolymer melting point was observed to decrease with increasing comonomer incorporation. The upper limit for incorporation of the comonomer 2 was found to be ca. 4 mol per cent. Viscosity and end group analysis (by 1H NMR) indicate molecular weights in the range of 104 to 105. The comonomeric unit demonstrates the ability to act as both a stopper against unzipping and as a trap for certain degrading agents.

Corroesponding to an adsorption in the first case in an adlineation in the second case. Both processes diminish the free energy and herewith the activity of the boundary, so inhibiting the possibilities of corrosion.Local elements, glow cathodes and catalysts consisting of several components are typical systems acting at microscopic boundary-lines. Cavitation is the inverse phenomenon.Macroscopic boundary-lines in partially filled containers, formed by wall, liquor and gaseous phase, are about this especially active, as being mixed with a four-phases-point-system, that results from the heterogeneity of the container wall. Gravity potentials, and electrokinetic potentials have their maximum value in the boundary-lines too.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Surfaces Energy of Stable MaterialsAn explanation of the basic meaning and importance of interfacial surface forces in the building up of materials is followed by an examination of the manysided relations between the surface energy and the other properties of solid materials. The relationships between the tensile strength and other mechanical values, the importance of capillary pressure in active fillers and in separation hardening, the place of synthetic materials in the “Paracher Diagram”, their relation to the specific entropy and others factors are examples of this. Some actual numerical values for surface tension of metals in the solid state, inorganic compounds and synthetic materials are mentioned. However, most of these values depend on empirical methods of calculation.
    Notes: Nach einer Darlegung über die grundsätzliche Bedeutung der Grenzflächenkräfte für den Aufbau der Stoffe wird auf die vielseitigen Bezichungen zwischen Oberflächenenergie und anderen Eigenschaften kompakter Materie eingegangen.     Notes: Endothelial cells are known to bind to laminin, and two peptides derived from the laminin A (CTFALRGDNP) and B1(CDPGYIGSR) chains block the capillary-like tube formation on a laminin-rich basement membrane matrix, Matrigel. In the present study, we have used various in vitro and in vivo assays to investigate the angiogenic-biologic effects of a third active site in the laminin A chain, CSRARKQAASIKVAVSADR (designated PA22-2) on endothelial cells. The SIKVAV-containing peptide was as active as the YIGSR-containing peptide for endothelial cell attachment but was less active than either the RGD-containing peptide or intact laminin. Endothelial cells seeded on this peptide appeared fibroblastic with many extended processes, unlike the normal cobblestone morphology observed on tissue culture plastic. In addition, in contrast to normal tube formation on Matrigel, short irregular structures formed, some of which penetrated the matrix and sprouting was more apparent. Analysis of endothelial cell conditioned media of cells cultured in the presence of this peptide indicated degradation of the Matrigel and zymograms demonstrated active collagenase IV (gelatinase) at 68 and 62 Kd. A murine in vivo angiogenesis assay and the chick yolk sac/chorioallantoic membrane assays with the peptide demonstrated increased endothelial cell mobilization, capillary branching, and vessel formation. These data suggest that the -SIKVAV-site may play an important role in initiating branching and formation of new capillaries from the parent vessels, a behavior that is observed in vivo in response to tumor growth or in the normal vascular response to injury. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Study of the diffusion in polymers of molecules comparable in size and structure to the segments of the chain molecules is suggested as a means of securing information on structure and molecular friction forces in polymers. A convenient method for measuring the diffusivity in polymers of such compounds tagged with C-14 was devised and used to study the diffusivity of octadecane, octadecanol, stearic acid, and octadecyl stearate for a range of temperatures in polymers including natural rubber, GR-S, polybutadiene, polyisoprene, and polyisobutylene. Diffusivities were independent of concentration for the range used. The diffusivities of straight chain hydrocarbons in natural rubber appear to vary inversely as the molecular weight of the diffusing compound. Evidence was found for association effects in the diffusion of stearic acid in natural rubber. Activation energies for diffusion of the compounds were quite similar in any one polymer and of the same order as reported for low molecular weight hydrocarbons and for viscous flow. Larger differences in activation energies were observed for diffusion in the different polymers. Correlations were observed for the diffusivities of octadecane in a series of polymers with their densities and thermal expansivities, especially the latter. Some study was given to the effect on the diffusivity of octadecane of such parameters as polymer unsaturation, solution viscosity, molecular weight, and crosslink density. The diffusivity of octadecane in natural rubber had a pronounced maximum as a function of crosslink density, coinciding with the maximum in tensile strength. Possible implications of this are discussed. The diffusivities of octadecane in a series of elastomers were studied in relation to the internal frictional losses observed for 60 cps vibrations over a range of temperatures. It was concluded that frictional forces deduced from the diffusivity measurements have some correspondence to high frequency viscoelastic phenomena which involve small units of structure comparable in size to the segments of the polymer molecules.

    Notes: The tensile strength degradation of nylon 66 and Kevlar 29 yarns was studied at elevated temperatures and over a broad range of relative humidities. The degradation rates for nylon are initially slow but increase rapidly, suggesting the depletion of an inhibitor. Kevlar showed no evidence for similar inhibitor action. The effect of relative humidity on degradation can be very large, especially at values in the 90-100% range and at elevated temperatures. Degradation is governed by thermal-oxidative and moisture-induced mechanisms. At the very high humidities and elevated temperatures, the moisture-induced degradation predominates. Rate relationships were developed in which contributions from each mechanism were considered. Calculated degradation from these relationships agrees well with observed degradation over a broad range of temperatures and humidities.
