Notes: Abstract The antiinsectan properties of the Fusarium graminearum-derived novel sterol sulfate, 4,4,24-trimethylcholesta-8,14,24(28)-trien-2α,3β,11α,12β-tetrol 12 acetate, 3-sulfate were tested on the corn earworm (Heliothis zea (Boddie), the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), and the driedfruit beetle (Carpophilus hemipterus L.). The sterol sulfate could not be used as a sterol source by any of the insects. The sterol sulfate inhibited growth of S. frugiperda and C. hemipterus larvae at 2500 and 4000 ppm, respectively. Defensive implications of this compound are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Derived from comprehensive clinical and blood gas analytical studies performed on 479 patients treated in the intensive care unit for CO-intoxication since 1957, a classification of subacute CO-intoxication into three stages of severity is made on the basis of level of consciousness as well as respiratory, circulatory and acid-base status. In the absence of a relationship between the degree of severity of the intoxication and HbCO-concentration in the blood at the time of hospital admission, stages II and III are characterized by a metabolic acidosis resulting from previous CO-caused tissue hypoxia and by signs of progressive circulatory shock. Immediate treatment of this condition by alkalization with NaHCO3 and mechanical ventilation with oxygen by concomitant muscle relaxation has allowed a reduction in mortality from 11.2 to 4.2 percent.
