Notes: Abstract As a nondestructive testing, eddy currents are largely used by industry. Nevertheless, complete automatization of the devices are still unusual, especially those that are able to make a classification of the different kinds of defects likely to appear in the tested material. We propose a method based on a few simple hypotheses on the shape of the defect and the reaction of the probe which permits the extraction of information sufficient enough for classification. The analysis of the “image” of the defect which is obtained by the scanning of the tested piece involves two steps: (1) an analysis of the orientation and the shape of the defect and (2) the analysis of the relief of this image, which determines the position of significant features. The method has been tested on a given sample of population with a 80% rate of success.

Notes: Summary The retention of a group of 38 E-s-cis and Z-s-cis chalcones on silica vs. nine polar chemically bonded phases is discussed. It was established that the relatively greatest similarity to silica is observed with the NH2, DIOL and CN phases, whereas the chargetransfer type phases and the NO2 one offer a different separation selectivity.

Notes: Summary The retention of 36 E-s-cis and Z-s-cis chalcone isomers has been measured using 20 normal phase HPLC systems containing the chemically-bonded stationary phases, Zorbax ODS, LiChrospher 100 Diol and Spherisorb AP (n-propylpicryl ether bonded to silica gel), with a variety of mobile phase modifiers. Tetentivity and the specific properties of these chromatographicsystems are considered. The experimental results were processed using correspondence factor analysis and hicrarchical ascending classification.

Notes: Summary A series of 72 substitutedN-benzylideneanilines (NBA) has been studied by normal-phase liquid chromatography by use of an experimental design based on variation of the composition of mobile phases prepared from heptane and three modifiers, tetrahydrofuran, 1-octanol and ethyl acetate, for each of which the specific interactions are different. Seven mobile phases were defined in the experimental design. The chromatographic data obtained are used to discuss the behavior of NBA by application of complementary chemometric methods—hierarchical ascending classification (HAC) and correspondence factor analysis (CFA). Although solute polarity has the greatest effect on retention, construction of HAC and CFA plots shows that solute behavior is also influenced by second-order electronic effects arising as a result of specific interactions between the solutes and the different modifier solvents. A quantitative structure-retention relationship has been established between Hammett's constants and the solutes projection on the first factorial axis of CFA.
