Notes: Abstract We undertook a study to explore the potential of microsatellite loci as genetic markers for investigating kinship patterns in a social waspParachartergus colobopterus. A plasmid library with small inserts was screened for several oligonucleotide repeat motifs. Positive clones were sequenced and several were selected for further work. PCR primers were constructed that would amplify the tandem repeat region and a number of female wasps were scored for variation in the number of tandem repeats at these loci. The five amplified loci were far more variable than allozymes, with an average heterozygosity of 0.35.

Notes: In this work, we evaluated structural and electronic similarities between a new class of acylhydrazones, recently presented as effective inhibitors of a Plasmodium falciparum cysteine protease, and a series of pyrazole arylacylhydrazones with analgesic and antiaggregating (antithrombotic) properties, using AM1. The calculated results suggest that at least one of the pyrazole compounds is similar enough to the active compounds to be considered as a candidate for a future antimalarial series. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: For the multidimensional Schrödinger equation, we develop a technique based on the moment problem formulation of this equation. The method provides systematic and rapidly converging upper and lower bounds to the ground state energy, and it enjoys the following features: 1The bounds are insensitive to the strength of the perturbation; that is, the method applies even to the most singular perturbation.2The method does not require the potential to be semibounded. It applies directly to potentials whose spectrum extends from minus to plus infinity, as is the case for the Zeeman effect in hydrogenic atoms.3The presence of continuum spectrum does not affect the method: no information coming from the continuum is needed.
