Notes: Ab initio Hartree-Fock calculations are performed on hydrates of the F- and Cl- ions using 6-31G, 6-31G**, and 6-21G basis sets. Geometries and binding energies are obtained. An estimate of the correlation energy is provided by an MP2/6-31G (Møller-Plesset second-order perturbation) calculation. Comparisons are made between the Cl-(SO2) and the Cl-(H2O) complexes.

Notes: Ab initio calculations using an STO-3G Gaussian basis set are performed in order to obtain the binding energy to the 06 and N7 of guanine of such amino acid models as the guanidinium ion for arginine, the ammonium ion for lysine, the methanol for serine, and the formamide for glutamic acid. The binding of formamide to adenine is also investigated. The charged ions exhibit a much higher binding energy to the bases, as expected, than the uncharged molecules. The order of binding strength is NH+4 〉 guanidinium+ 〉 formamide 〉 methanol, and for formamide, guanine 〉 adenine.

Notes: Phenyl acetylene complexes with HF, H2O, and NH3 are investigated with ab initio molecular orbital calculations using the 6-31G Gaussian basis set. HF is found to form a π complex, whereas H2O and NH3 form σ complexes. Observations of experimental spectroscopic shifts are rationalized.

Notes: Entropy and solvent effects are calculated for some conformations of Ala-Gly. The inclusion of these effects in energy calculations show the βII type structure to be the most stable.

Notes: A continuum and a discrete-continuum models are used to determine the solvation energies of FCH2COO-, FCH2COOH, and F2CHCOO-. For the anions, the continuum model provides results closer to the experiment, while for the acid, the addition of one water molecule improves the continuum-only energy.
