Abstract Since microvascular procedures are gaining in importance in reconstructive surgery, the need for a specialised monitoring system for detection of vascular compromise, is obvious and storage of data is obligatory. Such a system should be reliable and easy to use. For monitoring purposes, the skin temperature and laser Doppler flowmetry have been elected as the devices which have proven to be the most reliable, with good sensitivity and specitivity. In our computer system these devices can be displayed continuously and simultaneously over a 24-h period. Data of different patients can be stored easily and rapid detection of compromised circulation is achieved. In 1991, 31 microvascular procedures were monitored using this computer system. With this system we have achieved data acquisition, displayed patient's microvascular status and decreased the workload upon nursing and medical staff, this has resulted in an early detection of compromised circulation.
