Notizen: Abstract The conductivities of dilute aqueous mixtures of NaCl-MgCl2 have been determined at various ionic compositions and at 25°C. These results are used to assess the applicability of modern theories of electrolytic conductivity.

Notizen: Abstract The conductivity of LiOH aqueous solutions has been determined at 15, 25, and 45°C. The data analysis showed that LiOH is a slightly associated electrolyte, its association increasing with temperature. The association constant and distance parameter obtained from the conductivity data were successfully employed to calculate the activity coefficients of the solutions. The same procedure applied to very precise conductivity data for NaOH aqueous solutions enabled us to assess the reliability of this method of calculation of activity coefficients up to 0.1m. The alkali metal hydroxides show a reverse trend in the way their properties change with cationic radius, as is the case for the fluorides with which they are compared.

Notizen: Abstract Conductivity equations, based on the mean spherical approximation (MSA), haverecently been derived. We compare their performance with that of classicalequations at the level of experimental uncertainty using conductivity data forsome typical electrolyte solutions. For symmetrical electrolytes, the pictureisconsistent showing a better performance for the classical equations. The Leeand Wheaton equation also shows advantages at moderate concentrations. Forunsymmetrical electrolytes, the differences between MSA and classical equationsis larger. There is, however, an inherent inconsistency with the equilibriuminformation, which cannot be resolved at present.

Notizen: Abstract The conductivities of aqueous solutions of sodium borate at 25°C and lithium borate at various temperatures are reported. The conductivity of the B(OH) 4 − ion is 35.3 ±0.2 S-cm2-mole−1 at 25°C. The electrolytes are both associated, the lithium salt being more associated than the sodium salt. The mobilities and association constants obtained from the conductivity data agree with a model recently proposed for the H2O−B(OH) 4 − interactions. A discrepancy in the reported thermodynamic behavior of NaB(OH)4 aqueous solutions has been resolved by means of the association constants obtained in the present study. Thus the usefulness of the conductivity measurements to determine excess chemical potentials of binary electrolytes in dilute solution is again shown.
