Notes: Abstract Preference for ethanol in rats, overcoming the problem of a position habit, was assessed in a one-lever and two-liquid chamber. Performance in lever pressing for ethanol of different concentrations (2.5%, 5.0%, and 15.0%) and for water, as well as the amount of liquid intake, were recorded. Evidence of ethanol preference was observed by both the lever press and consumption measures when the concentration was 2.5%. Water preference was evident at higher concentrations. The present method proved to be a useful method for studying ethanol preference in rats.

Notes: Summary CrowdedEpirrita larvae had shorter larval periods than, and similar pupal masses to, their solitary siblings when reared on low quality diets. When fed on high quality diets, pupal masses of crowded larvae were lower than in singletons, and there was no difference in larval period. Because changes in food availability (absolute shortage, induced resistance in foliage) are caused by high larval densities in the field, crowding-triggered phenotypic changes may helpEpirrita to overcome detrimental consequences of high larval density. Pupal period was longer in crowded larvae than in singletons and crowded adults emerged later than their solitary siblings. Eggs of late emerging moths eclosed late in the ensuing spring, which coincides with delayed leaf flush in the year after defoliation. The reason for the faster growth of crowded individuals on poor diets was higher intake albeit less thorough processing of food in crowded, but not in solitary, larvae. On good diets solitary individuals tended to consume more than crowded larvae but there was no difference in processing. Predicted differences of host plant use between stealthy and opportunistic types of herbivores (sensu Rhoades 1985) were generally found between solitary and aggregated larvae on poor but not on good diets. The group response could not be explained by benefits to the group although the assumptions of Wilson's model of group selection were satisfied.

Notes: Summary Between April and August 1991, 83 Japanese patients with symptomatic gallstones underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy in our clinics. A prospective randomized trial was carried out to examine the safety, efficacy, and complications of the two techniques, pneumoperitoneum vs an elevating method using a U-shaped retractor. Forty-two patients were randomly allocated to the pneumoperitoneum (P) group and 41 to the U-shaped retractor (U) group. These two groups were well matched with respect to age, sex, etiology, and the severity of the chronic cholecystitis. Laparoscopic resection was successful for 88.1% (37/42) in the P group and 100% (41/41) in the U group. In patients with a severe fibrotic gallbladder, the rate of success was significantly higher (P〈0.05) in the U group (100%, 6/6) than in the P group (11.8%, 1/6). In the moderately inflamed group, the operation time (mean±SD) was significantly (P〈0.01) less in the U group (58.7±22.7) than in theP group (87.3±18.3). With the U-shaped retractor the usual surgical instruments can be used, and a rapid and safer laparoscopic cholecystectomy can be carried out. We prefer this approach to a pneumoperitoneum for patients with an inflamed gallbladder as hospital stay and pain are minimal.

Notes: The persistence length of lugworm cuticle collagen in 0.1M acetic acid was evaluated as 1600 ∼ 1800 Å by Yamakawa-Fujii's model for a wormlike chain from the sedimentation constant and the intrinsic viscosity. The persistence length was further examined for a series of sample “collagen sonicates” produced by varying the duration of sonic irradiation. To estimate the salt effect on the persistence length, measurements were made over a range of NaCl concentrations from 0 to 0.1M. The results showed that the cuticle collagen and collagen sonicates had identical values of persistence length and that the neutral salt effect for the cuticle collagen was far smaller than that for DNA.

Notes: An experimental study of semi-continuous emulsion copolymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) and styrene (ST) was carried cut with an isothermal stirred vessel. Continuous addition of monomer emulsion (ME) was inserted between preliminary and finishing batch operations. A mathematical model to simulate the experimental results was also developed with a particular attention on the partition of hydrophilic AN between the aqueous and organic phases. The result of simulation was quite satisfactory even though the approximate rate expressions proposed by Szabo and Nauman (1) were employed.

Notes: To investigate the solution properties of polyethylene, which has the simplest structure of the vinyl polymers, experiments were made with a magnetically suspended equilibrium ultracentrifuge. Preliminary studies were carried out with a polystyrene-chloroform system at 25°C. and a polystyrene-methylcyclohexane system at 68°C. (which is close to the theta temperature) in order to check the difficulties involved in the flotation equilibrium in the former case and the high temperature measurement in the latter. However, no trouble was encountered in either system, and the results were discussed and compared with earlier results for polystyrene solutions. It was found that chloroform is a good solvent for polystyrene, and the measured weight-average molecular weight is somewhat smaller than the value obtained in a theta solvent. After overcoming some technical difficulties involved in studies at higher temperatures, we carried out experiments on polyethylene in α-chloronaphthalene at 130°C. The results are considered reasonable by comparison with results obtained by other methods. The sample employed, Marlex 50 of melt index 0.7, has a wide molecular weight distribution: i.e., Mz/Mw = 5.2 and Mz+1/Mz = 2.4.

Notes: Relatively uniform polymeric microspheres, the coefficients of variation being close to 10%, were obtained by the BPO-initiated suspension polymerization of styrenic monomers. Unlike the conventional stirred-tank system, a particular microporous glass membrane (SPG) provided uniform monomer droplets continuously when monomer was allowed to permeate through the micropores. The monomer droplets were suspended in an aqueous solution containing the stabilizing agents, transferred to a stirred vessel, and polymerized. Up to 10μm spheres, of a far narrower size distribution than those obtained by conventional microsuspension polymerization spheres, were obtained. The initial droplet size and distribution were retained with the successful suppression of secondary particle nucleation by the addition of hydroquinone in the aueous phase. Crosslinked polystyrene spheres were also synthesized in the presence of various low-molecular-weight diluents. While a good solvent, toluene, was not so effective; poor solvents, n-heptane and n-heptane, easily yielded the microporous structure, the specific surface area being as high as 160 m2/g. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Syntheses of various combinations of composite particles were carried out employing PVC-based latices, PVC, PVC-VAc and PVC-VD, as seed particles. Monomers for seed polymerization were chosen so that the solubility in water and the compatibility with seed polymer may influence the features of products. MMA, whose coverage improves the flow characteristics of PVC plastisols to a great extent, was most investigated along with MMA-ST, BMA, and ST. Smaller monomerpolymer feed ratio (M/P), smaller seed size, and the employment of monomers sparsely soluble in water were the key factors in preventing the nucleation of secondary particles during the seed polymerization. A quantitative correlation to evaluate how effectively monomer is converted for the formation of composite particles was proposed. Analyses by means of the electron microscopy (TEM and SEM), GPC, DSC, and TLC strongly anticipated the development of IPN structure and the formation of graft linkage between PVC-VAc core and PMMA.

Notes: Polystyrene microspheres with a small amount of acrylic acid (200 : 1) incorporated were synthesized by nonaqueous phase dispersion (NAD) polymerization to investigate the feasibility of use as a carrier for immobilized enzyme. Seeded emulsion polymerization was then carried out to obtain larger cross-linked polystyrene spheres, the structure of which was expected to yield a favorable environment to keep the original activity of the immobilized enzyme. Glucoamylase, a particular enzyme catalyzing the hydrolysis of oligosaccharides to glucose, was immobilized through peptide bonding using a carbodiimide activating agent. Thirty percent of the enzyme activity at maximum was retained relative to free glucoamylase. The immobilized enzyme remained active after 4 months, although its poor resistance to heat was not improved. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
