Summary The ROCHE tissue pH-electrode was tested in acute animal experiments under various metabolic conditions. In anesthetized dogs an electrode was placed in the subcutaneous tissue of the scalp, neck, and axilla. Simultaneous with the continuous measurement of tissue pH, the overall acid-base balance of the animal was measured discontinuously at 5-min intervals by means of indwelling arterial and venous catheters. Various forms of acidosis and hypoxia were produced in the experimental animal and the sensitivity of the electrodes in relation to their site was tested. A high correlation between the continuously measured tissue pH values and the corresponding arterial and venous actual blood pH values was found in the physiologic pH range. With acute changes of acid-base balance no correlation could be found in the acidotic range.

Zusammenfassung Im akuten Tierversuch mit Änderung des Saure-Basenhaushaltes wurde die kontinuierlich messende pH-Elektrode der Fa. ROCHE auf ihre Ansprechbarkeit und Meßgenauigkeit geprüft. Bei anästhesierten Hunden wurde die Elektrode in dem Subkutangewebe des Kopfes, des Halses und der Axilla befestigt. Simultan zur kontinuierlichen pH-Messung wurden über arterielle und venöse Katheter diskontinuierlich in Abständen von 5 min sämtliche Parameter des Säure-Basenhaushaltes bestimmt. Verschiedene Formen der Acidose und Hypoxie wurden erzeugt und die Ansprechbarkeit und Meßgenauigkeit der pH-Elektrode, auch in bezug auf ihre Lokalisation, geprüft. Im physiologischen pH-Bereich wurde eine gute Korrelation zwischen Gewebe-pH und Blut-pH-Werten gefunden. Bei akuten Änderungen des Säure-Basenhaushaltes dagegen konnte dies im acidotischen Bereich nicht bestätigt werden.
