Notes: Summary Between 1969 and 1979, seventy-nine patients suffering from a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage, were operated on in the neurosurgical department of the University Clinic Essen (West Germany). A modified classification, the onset of symptoms and the diagnostic procedures are described and some data are compared with the results of other investigators. Other methods of closing a CSF fistula and the timing of operation are briefly discussed. Also the case history of a patient with orbitorrhoea is described.

Notes: Summary In the management of accident patients a physician must be able to recognize the lifethreatening complications of craniocerebral trauma. Therefore, he must be well versed in the symptomatology of such complications and by a short neurological examination be able to find out the risk to the patient. Only in this way is it possible to decide whether the patient has to be merely observed or additional neuroradiological investigation is necessary, whether he has to be transferred to a neurosurgical department or in emergency cases be operated on immediately. In acute epidural hematoma, e.g., with signs of midbrain compression, an instantaneous trephination is imperative; therefore, a general surgeon, too, should have the ability to perform such an operation, the technique of which is described in the paper.

Notes: Lanthanum fluoride and cerium fluoride single crystals, used as the sensing membranes of the fluoride ion-selective electrode (F-ISE), were investigated for their hydroxide interference and surface reactions with OH- in high pH conditions. While these membranes show fast response and excellent Nernstian behavior over a wide concertration range in buffered F- solutions, they deviate from the theoretical slope at high pH. CeF3, in particular, exhibits a much larger deviation from the Nernstian slope and a substantially slower response to a F- activity change compared to LaF3. This larger deviation is due to more extensive and faster formation of hydroxo-complexes, with the release of a greater amount of the fluoride ion into the hydrated gel layer. The slower response of the CeF3 membrane after contact with OH- is due to the formation of CeIV oxide on the surface, which acts as a blocking layer to the exchange of F-.
