Notes: Summary Crystalloids found in salivary duct cysts of the human parotid gland were examined by scanning electron microscopical observations with electron probe X-ray microanalysis. The cystic spaces were filled with numerous crystalloids which had a variety of forms with slight eosinophilic and glassy appearance. Scanning electron microscopically, crystalloids were hexagonal and rhombohedral in shape, and cutting the surface showed a polycyclic structure or regular parallel lamination. By electron probe X-ray microanalysis, sulphur was the only detected element. The present study suggests that crystalloids resulted from deposition from supersaturated saliva containing sulphur containing compounds into the cystic lumen or into epithelial cytoplasm.

Notes: Summary Mast cell granules have been detected ultrastructurally within the cytoplasm of fibroblasts in fibrous hyperplastic lesion of the human gingiva. This finding is interpreted as phagocytosis of mast cell granules by fibroblasts. It is estimated that phagocytosis of mast cell granules occurred in four to six per cent of the fibroblasts. The result of present study suggests that mast cells play some role in fibroblast activity not only in animals as reported previously, but also in human connective tissue.

Notes: Summary A pigmented adenomatoid odontogenic tumour occurring in the mandible of a 12-year-old Japanese girl is reported. In addition to the characteristic histopathologic features, fine granules and coarse aggregates of melanin pigment were widely distributed in the spindle-shaped epithelial cells between duct-like structures, and dendritic cells containing melanin pigment were also distributed in tumour epithelium. The possible histogenesis of melanin pigment in the epithelial cells of the odontogenic lesions is discussed, although no firm conclusions could be drawn.
