Notes: Abstract An analysis of recirculation in single-needle dialysis was performedin vitro. The percentage of recirculation was determined both as a function of fistula flow and of pulsatile arterial outflow, using water and blood as test liquids and using a single-head pump as well as a double-head pump. The most important factors responsible for recirculation were found to be (a) poor fistula flow compared with arterial outflow, (b) dead space and mixing in the needle and y-connectors and (c) compliance of the bloodlines in the dialyser circuit. It is concluded that an efficient, short, single-needle dialysis is not possible for patients with poor fistula flow. For other patients, the percentage of recirculation can be minimised by using a double-head pump and a compliant dialyser.
