Notes:
Summary The compositions of lumbar CSF and serum were determined in 33 epileptic patients in an interictal period and also just after a seizure. The changes in the concentrations of the carbohydrate metabolites suggest that during epileptic seizures both the glycolysis and the oxydative processes are disturbed. This does not mean anoxia in the classical sense, but the dysfunction of the enzymes involved in the carbohydrate metabolism. This dysfunction may account for the increase of CSF glucose which, without exception, can be observed after seizures. This increase suggests that during seizures the nerve cells are not able to perform the normal glucose breakdown.
