Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary The majority of previous investigations of the influence of cardiac glycosides on electrolyte metabolism have been concerned with alterations in sodium-, potassium- and calcium metabolism. Changes in electrolyte metabolism after application of cardiac glycosides can easily be studied in guinea pigs. The substances investigated (digitoxin, digoxin and k-strophanthine) were intraperitoneally injected. After acute application of high doses of k-strophanthine or digoxin the serum magnesium level is increased as well as the serum potassium level. The magnesium and potassium concentration gradients across the membranes of erythrocytes, skeletal and cardiac muscle cells are decreased. These changes are most pronounced after application of k-strophanthine. Digoxin acts similarly but to a lesser extent. The renal excretion of magnesium is inhibited by digoxin and k-strophanthine. This inhibition concerns calcium ions, too. Digitoxin shows no effect.
